Kids Contest. This Weekend

The Rockaway Beach Surfer’s Association along with sponsors Locals Surf School will have two surf contests this Saturday. One will be the Rockaway Beach Junior Championships for kids 16 and Under, the other will be the annual Halloween Surf Spooktacular contest which will have both adult and kids divisions. Costumes for the latter contest are strongly encouraged with prizes going to the best costume, best ride and best wipeout. Contest starts 9 a.m. and will be at the main jetty at Beach 90th St. $20 entry fee at the beach, $5 extra for any additional divisions, or you can register here: http://www.localssurfschool.com/surfspooktacular

RBSA 2016 NYC Longboard Championships

The RBSA has now confirmed this is on for November 12. Unfortunately with the date sliding into the colder months, hopefully we’ll catch another one of those Indian Summer days and it will be a great spectator’s event too. Turns out we have some of the best longboarders of all of Long Island in our backyard and there will be some serious bragging rights from this event. This will be an open format for men’s and women’s divisions. So lock in the date and signups will be encouraged online due to limited spaces. Online signups will be after this weekend at http://rbsurfersassociation.org

  A New World Champion

If you weren’t paying attention, there is a new world champion of surfing, a guy named John John Florence from Hawaii. At age 24, he’s pretty much had his sights on this title since he was age eight. A prodigy of Pipeline, arguably one of the heaviest waves in the world, JJF started surfing Pipe at age five!!! Everyone said he was world champion material and it was just a matter of time. JJF proved that it took a lot of hard work and dedication to keep on the straight and narrow to pull it off. There’s a message in there for all you kids 😉
