SHEA BREAKS GROUND 1961
Construction began October 1961 and Shea Stadium opened April 1964. There were 55k seats and it cost $28.5M to build. Named after William Shea, a lawyer, brought back MLB to New York after the Dodgers and NY Giants left for California in 1957. The NY Mets started in 1962. The first concert at Shea was the Beatles, on August 15, 1965. Rockaway residents will remember using an LIRR connection to the 7 train (platform on the left) to get to a game
