Massive Fire Destroys 4 Far Rockaway Apartments

A week before Thanksgiving, some Far Rockaway families lost their homes to fire. On Wednesday, November 18, a massive fire broke out in a seven-story apartment building on New Haven Avenue and Beach 22nd Street. The fire destroyed four apartments and injured four people, but miraculously, there were no casualties.

Firefighters quickly responded to the scene at 22-11 New Have Avenue after 8:30 p.m. and helped residents out of the building as the fire raged on the fifth floor. At least 100 firefighters responded and worked for two hours to get the fire under control. Dozens of people had to evacuate and at least two people had to be rescued from the building. Those who were injured faced injuries that were not life-threatening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The New York American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the families that were displaced by the fire.
