The Festival of Lights Illuminates Rockaway

The Festival of Lights is in full swing as those of the Jewish community have brought light across the peninsula with menorah lightings and celebrations of Hanukkah.

Covid-19 changed how some ceremonies were done over the past week, but it could not put out the flames of the spirit of the community. As Hanukkah kicked off for the first night on Thursday, December 10, Assembly District Leader Lew Simon officially lit the Beach 116th Street menorah.

On Friday, December 11, Far Rockway’s menorah on Mott Avenue was lit with a small group of representatives from local organizations such as the Rockaway Development & Revitalization Corp., the Jewish Community Council of the Rockaway Peninsula, the 101st Precinct, Rockaway Youth Task Force and others.

On Sunday, December 13, the community joined the religious school students of West End Temple outside for a socially-distanced celebration that included refreshments and singing as they lit the menorah out front. The event was also live-steamed on Facebook for those who couldn’t make it.

On the sixth night, Tuesday, December 15, those at Temple Beth-el celebrated with singing and laughter during a virtual celebration that was streamed on Temple Beth-El’s website.

Hanukkah officially comes to an end on Friday, December 18. Happy Hanukkah and Chag Sameach!
