We’ve now got a Top 10 in The Rockaway Times Photo Contest. A total of nine judges (from the Rockaway Times, NYC Ferry, NYC Parks, and Jamaica Bay – Rockway Parks Conservancy) had an excruciating time narrowing down from the Top 30 photos which are on display on the boardwalk. Congratulations to the Top 10 – all of whom will be eligible to win the top prize of $500. The final is scheduled from Friday, August 12. See the Top 10 on Pages 13 and 14.

And we’re already planning next year’s contest. We are half-thinking of spotlighting “people” in Rockaway. Now’s a good time of year to get fun photos with people swimming, enjoying sunsets, taking the ferry, whatever! The idea is to combine a great Rockaway scene with great Rockaway people.

We continue to get more awesome photos than we can print for our Local Color feature –thank you!– and this week we’re giving full attention to the Photo Finalists and Local Color will return next week. If you want to join the Local Color fun, please send (no more than 2!) photos each week to Mail@Rockawaytimes.com

In our “Spotted” photo last week with three people holding up Rockaway Times t-shirts in Maynooth, Ireland outside McMahon’s Pub, we said it was owned by Mike McMahon who owns Rogers on Beach 116th Street. Nope, it’s owned by his brother, Jimmy McMahon, who is a local here as well. And we better be sorry. We’ve seen Jimmy on Youtube when he was a top-caliber welterweight. If you’re in Maynooth, stop by McMahon’s! The staff at McMahon’s is amazing!

It’s not like it was a spinning shark or something. There was very little buzz about a Mercedes being driven into the ocean at Beach 74th Street.

Arverne By The Sea (ABTS) has a new vitality and burgeoning night life. The television show, Good Day New York, gave Bar Marseilles a rave on a recent feature. Bar Marseilles and Batesy’s and the Tiki Bar are all great options for food and drink and each one has its own style and uniqueness. Vino by the Sea and Boardwalk Pizza have always been reason enough to go to ABTS but now there’s plenty more reason!

Carnival Rockaway style. State Senator James Sanders Jr. with Assembly Member Khaleel Anderson and City Council Majority Whip Selvena N. Brooks Powers) invite you the Queens Carnival, formerly the Caribbean Carnival in the Rockaways, on Saturday, August 27. The annual bash features Mas costumes, moko jumbies, singers, dancers, island food, a fun run, sandcastle building contest, fireworks display and much more.

It was just a few weeks back that we reported that Elegante Pizzeria had changed hands and now another pizza place is coming under new management. Bart Troiano, who built Boardwalk Pizza into a peninsula favorite (he started just after Hurricane Sandy), is moving on. Best of luck, Bart! We wish the new owners best wishes!

Speaking of pizza, and we do often, we have to send best wishes to Tommy’s Pizza, a recently reopened place in Broad Channel under new ownership. We’re hearing rave reviews so far.
