Poseidon Swims On This Saturday

Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, seafarers and land lubbers, mermaids and mermen:  This Saturday, September 17, at high noon, Rockaway will be celebrating the end of the 2022 summer season with the 7th annual Poseidon’s Parade. This year’s parade looks to be a complete peninsula-wide blowout with sea creatures and costumed crustacean’s flooding the neighborhood for the annual end of summer stroll. Registration is wide open, and it is not too late to get your costume or group together and join the insanity.

This year’s parade will be lining up at Caracas on Beach 106th, where participants can enjoy some breakfast arepas and spicy Micheladas. After the judges have been briefed and the Queen and Captain are satisfied, the parade will begin its downtown boardwalk boogie. This year the judges will be lined up on lifeguard chairs on Beach 102nd Street.

Speaking of judges, this year’s panel is a who’s who of Rockaway legends. This secret circuit court will be judging participants in 11 categories:  Best Float, Best Pet, The “Ms. Colombia Award” (Best Individual), Best Block, Best Performance, Best Children’s Group, Best Pub/Restaurant, Best Recycled Materials, Best Bike, and  Best Overall.  This year, the Best Adult Group will receive “The Kristine Caruso Award,” which is named in honor of a late lifelong mermaid, and a staple of the parade since its inception. The handmade trophies are almost complete, and in all my years covering this parade, they are clearly the best trophies yet. In order to receive extra consideration, bribery is an encouraged practice in this ruthless competition. The judges will be expecting to cash in on this once in a lifetime opportunity (In order to maintain any semblance of justice, judges are only allowed to serve in one parade).

The parade will be wrapping up at the 97th Street concessions, where Max Power will be DJing the awards ceremony. Whalemina will be waiting patiently for the awards ceremony and the conclusion of the parade. Additionally, there will be face painters and activities for children and adults alike, and the annual t-shirts will be available for purchase.

After the awards, Junxion NYC will be taking over the afterparty with a team of DJs and performances that will make you want to move and groove. You can register on Poseidonsparade.com. Same day registration will be available at Caracas. Come out and support Rockaway’s epic family friendly art parade.
