SFDS Soccer Wraps Up A Strong Week 2
The SFDS CYO soccer teams continued their winning ways, as they compiled an 8-0-2 record, for the week.
On Saturday, the 6th grade boys played their first game since walking off the field Diocesan Champions last season. They did not miss a beat, defeating St. Anastasia 4-1, in a complete team effort. John Petrie spearheaded the offense, scoring two first half goals, while William Kelly and Giorgio Mazzaferro each netted their first goals of the season. Defensively, Tommy Aiken, Rafael Campos and Padraig O’Rourke locked things down. The pace of the game was controlled by JW Youngberg and Paul Pedone, who dominated the midfield. Goalie James Moriarty finally let one get past him, after two shutouts to end last season, but that one was all St. Anastasia could muster.
The 5th grade girls defeated Camillus/Virgilius by a score of 3-0. The goals were scored by Logan Leahy, Dakota Duffy and Jillian Heeran. Camillus/Virgilius’ attack was suffocated by the SFDS defense, with particularly strong play from Lola Dory and Maggie Chasnoff. Only four shots on goal were taken and all were turned away by goalkeeper Caitlin Briggs.
The 5th grade boys won their second straight, defeating Camillus/Virgilius by a score of 5-0. Goals were scored by Johnny Evangelista, Thomas Tacconi, Aiden Buonanno, Shane Tubridy and Timmy Stines. The team had strong defensive play from Jack McCann, Kevin Heegan and Nick Tomassetti, with Pete Hayden turning in a stellar game at goal.
