In just a few weeks, we will mark the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Sandy and the devastating impact it had on Rockaway. We’ll be printing Then And Now, Before and After, photos and would be happy to print some from our readers. If you’ve got a couple of shots that dramatically capture or contrast the scenes from 2012 and today, please email us at Mail@rockawaytimes.com and put Sandy in the subject line.

Congratulations to John “Jay” Burke, a long-time resident of Breezy Point and friend to many has been elected to the New Utrecht High School Hall of Fame in Brooklyn. The induction takes place this Saturday, October 8 at the school prior to the game against Bayside High School. Jay started coaching youth football in 1960 and from there went on to coach CYO, AAU, Xavier, and New Utrecht among many places. A Hall of Fame induction is well-deserved for this generous and influential leader.

The QueensLink rally, postponed last Sunday because of rain, has been rescheduled to Sunday, October 9 at 2 p.m.  The group advocates for the Rockaway Beach Branch reactivation (and with it a manageable Rockaway commute to the city) and they could use your support. The rally is at the boardwalk and Beach 92nd Street.

In anticipation of Veteran’s Day on November 11, Temple Beth-El of Rockaway Park will be honoring veterans a little early, on October 22, with a service followed by lunch and special guests. Our friends at Temple Beth-El tell us they received an article that of interest that goes all the way back to revolutionary times. It seems that when President George Washington saw the commitment of the Jewish community to the military struggle for independence, he said, “May the children of the stock of Abraham continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other inhabitants.” Temple Beth-El, its congregants and guests will be invited to participate in the special program and hope you will join as well.  We’ll have additional details in next week’s paper.
