SFDS Soccer Season Keeps Rolling Along
The past two weeks have been action-packed, for all of the SFDS Soccer teams, as the regular season draws to close. Undeterred by two or three games each weekend, the players, across all grades, continue to have positive outcomes on the pitch. As we head into the last weekend of the regular season, with the prospect of playoff berths alive and well for many of the teams, the spirit and determination of our young athletes continues to shine through.
The 8th grade girls kept their focus last weekend, resulting in two positive outcomes. On Saturday against Holy Child, they secured a 3-0 win. Sunday proved to be more of the same, against Camilus/Virgilus, as they emerged with a 4-0 win. Goalie, Maryann Polonco, held both opponents scoreless as she continued her strong season. There were impressive performances across the board, led by Shannon Gilroy, Maggie Wynne, Fiona Brady and Layla Tawil. Fantastic defensive contributions came from Lexi Gennaro and Kayla Grosetto, who was also celebrating her birthday. Happy Birthday, Kayla and congrats 8th grade girls!
The 6th grade boys got down to business, playing six games in 12 days, and compiling a record of 5-1, over that span. We could list every player as a positive contributor, but, instead, will focus on a few who have consistently contributed to the team’s overall success. The team has been led by the outstanding defensive play of Tommy Aiken, Owen Shaffer and Jack Neville; as well the midfield excellence of players: Brendan Hayden, Matthew Miller and Gianluca Coyle. Offensively the team has been led by Giorgio Mazzaferro and JW Youngberg, along with strong contributions from Michael Pedone, Tommy O’Neill and Michael Noone.
The 5th grade girls continue to shine. They played their crosstown rivals, Blessed Trinity, and walked away with a 4-1 win. As is always the case, when these two parishes square off, the competition was fierce. Logan Leahy netted two, both on penalty kicks. Also adding goals were Fionnuala Fitzgerald, who scored from 30 yards out, and Dakota Duffy, who used some fancy footwork for her goal. Anna Corvi and Savannah Last also played well-rounded games. Maeve Powell led the defense and worked in tandem, with goalie Kate Graves, who had an impressive stop on a penalty kick, to hold Blessed Trinity to one goal.
