The New American Lawn

When we think of our front yards, we think of shrubs, flowers, and a green lawn. But lately a number of my clients at Sungold Design Group have been asking me for alternatives to a high-maintenance traditional grass lawn. With average temperatures increasing, and water becoming more expensive, it’s more and more difficult to maintain the lush greenery of grass lawns. Also, the truth is that we live on top of sand, so when we water it drains right through making it a constant race to provide our lawns with the proper amount of water to avoid the dreaded browning. Weeds can take over when th…

A SIDE ISSUE DUE TO A HOT SITUATION…

A long time ago in Rockaway Beach, far, far away, a house fire took place on Bayside Place (Bch. 84th Street) in the Hammel’s Section of the peninsula.  The heat from this house fire was so intense that nearby homes, some distance away, were threatened with spontaneous combustion! The NYC Fire Department saved the day by spraying water on the endangered buildings that were close by to keep them cooled down. But despite the efforts, the vinyl siding on one house melted down. But this home was saved from total destruction. A job well done by NEW YORK’s BRAVEST!!!

CRUEL AND STANDARDIZED PUNISHMENT

My daughter, MJ Diehl, has a fourth-grader who was subjected to the New York State ELA exams. She nicknamed the testing experience aptly—“Cruel and Standardized Punishment”. The reactions of my students, in The Fifth-Grade Writers’ Club at PS/MS 114 substantiate her indictment. I’ve taught children of various backgrounds and skill-sets for decades… and if there’s one thing I know, there’s a more humane and effective way to evaluate intelligence and tap into a child’s true potential. My students echo these sentiments below:   JOSHUA NATANZON State Test Mayhem: Ring! The state test had beg…

On The Road With Rover And Rosa. Thailand

One of the best things about travel is its infinite fluidity. The travel experience is so dependent on you, the traveler, that even visiting the exact same place can produce a drastically different experience based on your mindset and energy. The same goes for timing and order when traveling to multiple countries on the same trip. For Irish Rosa and I, Thailand as our fourth destination, put it in a tough position to maximize its potential.  So while we enjoyed it, it stands as a relative disappointment, but that’s as much about us, as it is Thailand. At concerts, the crowd and band feed o…

Rockaway Little League. Rockies Nip Reds In Senior Thriller

Rain washed out last Sunday’s slate but there was enough action to go around on Saturday, highlighted by the J&E Industries Rockies’ extra inning win over the previously undefeated Slices ‘n Ices Reds. The Reds had started the year with Rockaway Little League’s best record (5-0) and were looking to reach the halfway point of the season untarnished.  The Rockies meanwhile dug an 0-2 hole early on and were hoping to fight their way back to .500.  The J&E squad had the advantage late but Slices ‘n Ices was not going to relinquish first place easily.  The Reds scored two runs in their …

CB 14 Economic Committee Recap. Boardwalk Vendors, Downtown Far Rock & Microgrids

The Economic Development Committee of Community Board 14 convened on Monday, April 25 to discuss items such as beach vendors near Beach 116th Street, the revitalization of Downtown Far Rockaway and a proposal to bring a series of microgrids throughout Rockaway. A representative from the Rockaway Beach Club, a group representing boardwalk vendors, came to the meeting to get input on the boundaries for boardwalk vendors near Beach 116th Street. The RBC proposed a two-block buffer zone, meaning vendors could only go as close as Beach 114th or Beach 118th Street. “We’re conscious about what mo…

Some Nerve

Reader alert.  Avert your eyes if you can’t stand a little blue language.  I’d never use such language, Mom.  I’m just gonna quote because I gotta show some backbone, some nerve, some you know…. Anyway, last week I had one person mad at me.  This week I’ll have 1,223.  You saw last week’s letters, in the We Get Email section, right?  Someone was mad at me because I didn’t have the balls to write about the scourge of underage drinking and if I had any real balls I’d put it on the front page. And they made fun of Boyleing Points.  That hurt.  The letter writer said I had nothing to say and…
