***** The Timmy Klein Volleyball Tournament held last Saturday in honor of the fallen firefighter and friend to many was an amazing site to behold. We’re bad at guessing crowd numbers but it looked like a few thousand showed to play and/or join the fun and support the event (which raised money for The Timmy Klein Foundation and the Answer The Call Foundation. Big, big kudos go to the many volunteers and donors. ***** Sometimes we forget to acknowledge some accomplishments and we’re definitely late with this one: Congratulations to The Rockaway Beach Surf Shop which got started in 1972, 50 years...

***** Somebody’s gonna say otherwise, but we’re saying NYC Parks deserves a lot of praise for cleaning up so well after the 4th of July. ***** Our Sandcastle contest is postponed. The date is TBA but please do not show up for the contest this Sunday, July 11! ***** We jumped the shark! Previously at 2.7M, our video of Tess Howley’s welcome home parade has officially reached more than 3 million people on Facebook. Wild. ***** Have a splash! The 4th Annual Jamaica Bay Festival on City of Water Day is this Saturday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.  The Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, American Littoral...

***** The Rockaway Times wishes everyone a safe and Happy 4th of July! ***** Two and a half million plus. 2.7 million and counting. That’s a lot of people. And that’s how many people viewed a Facebook post we put up last week. Katie McFadden shot a video of the parade for Tess Howley, who’d just returned from the Olympic trials in Omaha, Nebraska. The wonderfully supportive community display clearly touched a lot of people, even worldwide. The comments and praise for Tess and Rockaway gave us goosebumps! ***** Thanks for your thanks. There was a lot of praise online as well for The Rockaway...

Happy anniversary to…US! The Rockaway Times turns 7 on June 26. When we first published, the other Times, the New York one, called us “an unusual start-up,” since a good old fashioned newspaper was so different than many other media and internet start-ups. ***** The National Park Service (NPS) runs Gateway National Park and Recreation Area. It sure seems like they forget the recreation part. The Rockaway Beach Volleyball League is still prohibited from running the Wednesday evening tradition for god-knows-what-reason. (Yes, if piping plovers had a team, NPS would move heaven and earth). The...

***** Happy Father’s Day!  To all the dear old dads, we hope you have a great day. ***** On Tuesday afternoon, we glanced out the backdoor and saw three men on The Hard Way Home. Three guys are rowing to Ireland. Rowing, yep. We yelled, Bon Voyage! and wished the young men well. Katie McFadden did a story on them in the May 13 issue. Unbelievable! ***** So, by next week’s edition, 6/24, the robocalls will stop (or should stop) as Primary Day is Tuesday, June 22 but it’s unlikely we’ll know much about a lot of the races. With Ranked Choice Voting there is unlikely to be a clear-cut winner in...

***** Start sending us your Dear Old Dad photos so we can publish them in our Father’s Day issue, June 17. Send to Mail@Rockawaytimes.com ***** Early voting starts, Saturday, June 12. Rockaway’s early voting site is the YMCA on Beach 73rd Street. ***** In many City Council primaries, there’s a clear favorite. District 32 (Eric Ulrich is term limited) really does seem up in the air with Mike Scala, Felicia Singh, Kaled Alamarie, Helal Sheikh, and Bella Matias looking to win the Dem primary. On the Republican side, Joann Ariola faces Steve Sirgiovanni. Joann has the backing of Ulrich; Steve has...

***** The Rockaway Times Summer & Community Guide is out and will be distributed through the 4th of July. Keep an eye out for your copy at local businesses and at our orange news racks. We’re thrilled with the response. Thank you for the compliments! ***** Are you proud of the grad(s) in the house? Or maybe you’re proud grandparents who want to give a shout out to the youngsters who will soon be donning the cap and gown. Why not take out a congratulatory ad in The Rockaway Times?  You give us the info and we’ll make it nice. Call Mary 718-634-3030 or email her at Mary@Rockawaytimes.com and...

***** Here’s to a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend for all. And please take time to remember those who died while serving in the Armed Forces. ***** Maureen Walsh, one of the stewards of Memorial Circle in Rockaway Park, alerted us to a missing marker, a concrete block with a brass plaque indicating the names and branch of service of the fallen, etc. Apparently when trees were planted, one went missing. Know anything about it? Contact Maureen (no questions asked!) at 347-731-0285. ***** The official beach opening will occur at Beach 17th Street and the boardwalk on Friday, May 28, at...

***** Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato wrote a letter to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg  requesting funding to rebuild and restore the Rockaway Beach Rail Line, which would drastically cut the commuting time to the City. The MTA produced a study indicating it (Queenslink) would cost several billion dollars. Amato suggested the Biden administration send some of those billions from any infrastructure bill. Good idea. But if Stacey really wants this to get traction, she will enlist the support of Congressmen Hakeem Jeffries and Gregory Meeks. Jeffries certainly has the ear of the administration...
