***** Happy Birthday to us! The Rockaway Times is two years old this week.  We’re still here because of you—our readers – and the advertisers who believe in us.  Thanks! ***** So a few people ventured into The City last weekend to catch a play at the Irish Repertory Theater when who did they run into?  Monsignor Geraghty, the much-loved former parish pastor at St. Francis de Sales.  Not only is Monsignor much-loved but he’s well-read, too.  When he greeted the locals, he had to admonish them a bit:  “Didn’t you read Boyle’s article about never leaving Rockaway in the summer?!” ***** It’s kind...

***** So a (possibly) new bar restaurant with an old name caused quite a stir on Facebook.  A large banner appeared on the building at Beach 112th and The Boulevard seeming to announce that the Irish Circle was coming to the location that has been bad luck spot so far.  The place has been Pisces, Patrick’s, La Joya, Taco King, and El Pasatiempo, to name a few.  Owen Baxter, who ran The Beautiful Palm Gardens bar some years back, is behind the new venture.  There’s no other connection to the place that was made famous on Beach 102nd Street which is now home to Community House. ***** Nothing like...

***** You might have seen the story about a boat in distress in Jamaica Bay using a cork from an Absolut vodka bottle to plug a hole and avert disaster.  Well, another detail emerged: said cork was supplied by Bob Leckie of The Wharf.  Bob knows the bar business but he knows his way around boats, too.  ***** Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder announced that he won’t be running for re-election.   We always thought he’d stay in office until he landed on the front page of The Rockaway Times (it was so easy for him to do that in other Queens papers!).  He used to tell us he couldn’t compete with sunsets. ...

***** Our Summer Guide will be distributed over the next several weeks.  A list of advertisers is on Page 28.  Many of them have extra copies. The comments we’ve gotten have been quite generous and we’re thankful. More than a few people said it looks like something you’d find in Ocean City, Maryland or some other tourist destination where the government or Chamber of Commerce funds such publications.  Congrats go to our tiny staff for making it happen.  Of course, we have heard of a few omissions – -sorry about that – but that just makes us want to do better next year.  ***** Did you happen...

Our Summer/ Community Guide is out!  The 96 page FREE magazine is chock-full of information and great articles and an advertiser index (so you’ll know where to go or whom to call).  We will be distributing the guide from now through 4th of July weekend.   Picking the cover was a tough choice but we finally settled on a photo of a bike on the beach by Tim Burke.  A bike, a beach, a sunset – now that’s a cover! ***** With beaches opening and the season getting underway it’s sometimes easy to forget that Monday is Memorial Day.  Last year’s parade was the best attended in many years.  The parade...

***** Congratulations to the former fat man, Bruce Bernfeld.  Almost a year ago, Bruce started writing the Diary of a Fat Man column.  He called us on Tuesday to say he had lost 100 pounds since he started writing!  He figured making his plight public would help and it seems it has. Way to go, Bruce. He lost 100 pounds and we lost a column.  (Though he’ll still write occasionally). ***** Rockaway WISH turns 10 and is having a fundraiser on Friday, May 27 at the Bungalow Bar starting at 7 pm.  For tickets contact Info@RockawayWish.org  or on Facebook. The women of WISH have done great charitable...

***** James Sanders Jr. dropped the idea of challenging Gregory Meeks for his congressional seat.  Well, another challenger has emerged.  Businessman Ali Mirza from Elmont, part of the 5th District, is running against Meeks in the upcoming Democratic primary on June 28. ***** Big round of applause to the organizers and participants of Taste of Rockaway.  The twice-a-year event is easily one of the most fun days on the Rockaway calendar.  ***** The Mother’s Day half-marathon sponsored by RockapulcoRun.com had a big turnout (with post race fun at Community House).  There’ll be another half marathon...

***** Happy Mother’s Day. ***** Follow the bouncing scandal ball.  You might have heard of Bill de Blasio’s Campaign for One New York, the nonprofit political arm of his operations.  The one that is now under investigation according to numerous outlets.  There’s at least one Rockaway tie.  One of the contributors to Campaign for One New York was Alma Realty.  Alma owns three of the Shorefront/Surfside buildings (Beach 105-Beach 108).  They were seeking a zoning change and looking to add three new four-story mixed use buildings on the property.   Many residents showed up at a Land Use Community...

***** We consider The Rockaway Times a group effort that includes YOU.  Please help us by letting our advertisers know you saw their ad.  Thanks! ***** The Rockaway Beach Golf Club, the virtual wonder on Beach 100th Street, is open, open, open after waiting, waiting, and waiting for various permits.  Check out their website: RockawayBeachGolfClub.com ***** Try to get over to Playland Motel on Sunday between 2-5.  Photos from our photo contest will be on display. John Cori, in addition to a thousand other things he’s involved with, has managed to put some order into this undertaking.  At some...
