John Cori, in addition to a thousand other things he’s involved with, has managed to put some order into this undertaking.  At some...

***** Happy Passover to those celebrating!  ***** Flood insurance alert. In a unanimous, bi-partisan vote, The House Financial Services Committee passed the Flood Insurance Market Parity and Modernization Act which can now go to the full congress for a vote. The act is expected to entice private insurers to offer flood insurance and with more companies writing policies there should be more competitive pricing. Until now, lenders (banks and mortgage companies) have demanded homeowners carry policies issued by the National Flood Insurance Program, which is now $23 billion in the hole. ...

***** Hey, there’s another Post Office option. This one’s in Broad Channel at the All American Channel Market at 925 Cross Bay Blvd.  Get stamps, send your packages and pick up some milk! ***** The Rockaway Beach Civic Association has a new president after a vote at the Knights of Columbus last week. Activist and columnist John Cori can now add President to his resume as he takes the reins from long time president Dolores Orr. Dolores is still the Chair of Community Board 14. ***** PS 114 and many in Belle Harbor are reeling from the news of the death of David Greenspan, a Special Education...

***** The Friends of Rockaway Beach and John Cori conducted an online survey about bike riding on the boardwalk.  Hundreds of people participated.  The two choices were: do you favor allowing bike riding seven days a week with some dismount areas or for keeping the current rule of No bike riding Sat and Sun between 10am-6am.  Thankfully common sense won in overwhelming fashion!  Allow bike riding all the time!  A few people made the sensible suggestion to ticket out of control or dangerous bike riders. Barring bikes is nonsense and if Parks enforces that dumb rule there should be a massive rally...

***** This Saturday, April 2nd, Locals Surf School will be hosting the 1st Annual Foam-Top Frenzy on Beach 90th Street.  The premise of the event is “No real Surfboards.” Essentially, anyone with a Foam-Top or alternative craft can enter. Awards will be given for “Best Wave,” “Best wipeout,” and “Best Alternative Craft.” Seems like wacky fun to us! The day starts at 10 am (but get there by 9:30 if you’re entering). There will be an after party at the Rockaway Beach Surf Club. Check out localssurfschool.com for more info. ***** You can start walking this week, start jogging next.  Soon you’ll...

***** Last Friday, in the middle of the day, a gunman opened fire probably from the rooftop of the Edgmere Houses also known as the Ocean Bay apartments at Beach 54th Street and Beach Channel Drive. Two cars, one with children, just sitting in traffic, were struck. No one was injured but what a terrifying incident.  Let’s hope there’s an arrest soon.  Too many innocent people are at risk. ***** Déjà vu. We’ve been down this railroad before. Yes, congratulations to Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder for proposing funding for a study for the Queens Rail Line.  (We don’t get the headlines this triggered. ...

***** Dog owners beware. Parks has been issuing $100 fines to dog owners who have let their dogs off a leash while on the beach. Several people contacted us about getting hit with fines though the beach was fairly deserted.   ***** Plan on making a day of it on May 7th. That’s when the spring Taste of Rockaway will be. Hundreds of people will descend upon Rockaway Beach for a fun day of sampling the area’s eateries.   ***** Last week we mentioned how a short video of the O’Malley Irish Dancers at the parade proved quite popular on Facebook. As of today, it’s reached more than 80,000 people....
