***** According to some reports, the restaurant industry will benefit greatly from the recently passed corona relief package approved by the Senate. There is a $25 billion “revitalization fund” for restaurants that will include grants to help them cover pandemic-related revenue losses. Let’s hope our many local places will be able to get some relief and prosper going forward. We are amazed that so many have been able to keep the doors open. ***** The American Rescue Plan, as it’s being called, should also be a huge boost for the MTA which has had service cuts and layoffs. A robust public transit...

***** The first week of March. We normally have a parade to get ready for. This year, we’re just marking the year anniversary of Covid’s arrival in New York. St. John’s Hospital had the first reported case in Queens on parade day. What a year it’s been. ***** After that brief bit, a couple weeks back, about the Neponsit Home being demolished and handed over to NYC Parks, there is now a sense of same ol’ same ol’. From the current agency in charge (NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation): A timeline for the transfer of the Neponsit Beach Hospital site to Parks has not been determined. “Once transferred...

***** We’d say congratulations, but there’s no winner yet. Selvena Brooks-Powers holds the lead in the City Council District 31 race with Pesach Osina closely trailing behind, but since nobody got 50% of the vote, ranked choice voting will come into play and rounds will begin in March. ***** According to the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League, the one and only meeting for the 2021 season is set for Wednesday, March 10 at 7 p.m. The place is yet to be determined but keep the date in mind and check out RBVL.com regularly. The National Park Service, which runs Riis Park, home of the RBVL,...

***** Breezy Point has one of the highest vaccination rates in the city (including partial, one shot so far).  Rockaway Park (including Belle Harbor and Neponsit) also has a good percentage compared to other parts of the city. You can track vaccination rates at www.public.tableau.com  ***** Early voting is underway in the Special Election in District 31. Many are vying for the seat vacated by Donovan Richards. Pesach Osina and Selvena Brooks are among the favorites. Whoever wins won’t have much time to get comfortable. There will likely be a number of people running in the primary in just a...

***** People of District 31 (Far Rockaway), here’s a reminder that a Special Election will be held Tuesday, February 23. Early voting begins February 13. Pesach Osina, Selvena Brooks, Manny Silva, Shaun Rux, and Latoya Benjamin are some of the names we know through their activism in Rockaway. Last we checked, there are nine candidates. This will be one of the first races that uses ranked-choice voting.   ***** Old people move to Florida but they all don’t retire. One guy moved to Tampa and won the Super Bowl. ***** As of Friday, February 12, restaurants can now open indoor dining with 25% capacity....

***** Tuesday was Groundhog’s Day but we know it’s basically been Groundhog Year. Oh, the Staten Island Ground Hog predicted an early spring but there was some controversy because the groundhog’s appearance was actually taped (which why not? It’s like Groundhog’s Day). Punxsutawney Phil on the other hand called for six more weeks of winter. ***** This is an annual statement of a pet peeve. We wish drivers would at least try to get snow off the roofs of their cars. Especially if they’ll be driving at high speeds on the highway. Snow can turn icy and become flying missiles. And then there are...

***** We think 2021 will get better but it won’t feel good on the first Saturday in March now that the Rockaway St. Patrick’s Parade has been canceled for this year. The City is not issuing the permits necessary for such events. ***** You might want to watch a local version of the Powerball (or mega thousands) this Saturday on Instagram. The Graybeards Pot-a-Gold raffle, a fundraiser to help the wonderful charitable organization, is now more than 100Gs. The drawing will happen via livestream on Instagram, @the.Graybeards, this Saturday evening, January 30 at 8 p.m. If you want to be part of the...

***** The nation reached a grim milestone on Tuesday. The Coronavirus death toll surpassed 400,000. ***** We heard a lot of people saying they would be hesitant to take the vaccine or not take it at all. Well, there’s been no shortage of people who want it. Available time slots sold out like hot concert tickets. If you weren’t quick on the sign-up you were left waiting. We hope vaccine supplies and other logistics get straightened out soon (immediately). The concern right now is that already scheduled appointments will be canceled because vaccine supply will run out. ***** It looks like there...

***** Sure seems like 2020 will be at least 14 months long. ***** Mike Scala, a Democrat who ran for City Council in 2017 opposing Eric Ulrich, is running again. He won’t be facing an incumbent this time around but there will be a lot of others in the race. Scala lives in Howard Beach but he’s in Rockaway often enough to be an almost local. He’s a lawyer who helped fight against the proposed homeless shelter on Beach 101st Street and has been a vocal advocate for QueensRail and expanded ferry service. ***** Jazmine Outlaw is the new Executive Director of the Rockaway Youth Task Force. We wish...
