Three years ago, close friends and family of late chef Adrienne Guttieri, brought a much-welcomed addition to Broad Channel—a restaurant in her memory. Just a week ahead of that anniversary, they fulfilled a goal of having Adrienne’s name grace multiple locations when they opened Adrienne’s Provisions on June 1, Broad Channel’s very own Italian market.
While you won’t find sandwiches at Adrienne’s restaurant on Van Brunt Road, at Adrienne’s Provisions at 925 Cross Bay Blvd., it’s the specialty. Order The Pepperoni Garlic: chicken cutlet, sundried peppers, fresh mozzarella and pistachio pesto on semolina bread spread with pepperoni garlic butter. The taste may be familiar, as it was inspired by the burrata appetizer at Adrienne’s restaurant on Van Brunt Road. Maybe opt for The Big A, for Adrienne, of course. That’s a take on their chopped Italian salad, except this time, a hero with Italian cold cuts, provolone, mozzarella, sun dried peppers and red wine vinaigrette. If you like the salad as is, you can get that out of the grab and go case, along with their signature Rigatoni Bolognese, fresh pastas and homemade sauces to make your own, and Aunt Coll’s cheesecake to complete your meal. Or maybe see what Joseph “Moonie” Hanning has concocted this week for his weekly Moonie’s Must Haves special that will surely go viral on TikTok. Last week was a chicken cutlet hero with whipped ricotta. This week, a Cubano with porchetta.
When business partners Frank Guttieri, Chris Keegan, Leo Chavanne, Jessica Guttieri and Joseph Hanning opened Adrienne’s on June 9, 2023, they knew it was just the beginning. “When we started Adrienne’s three years ago, we knew our goal was to eventually have Adrienne’s name hanging in more than one spot than the original, so our goal here is to continue to grow and expand,” Keegan said.
And an opportunity arose when All American Channel Market was closed earlier this year. “Frank came to me out of nowhere and said, ‘I got a crazy idea. What do you think if we took over the All American deli space on 10th Road, and turned it into an Italian market?’ I said that’s not crazy, it’s a great idea,” Keegan shared.
“I didn’t even know if it was for sale. I called and reached out,” Frank Guttieri said. “I like things that can achieve multiple goals. I look at that space as the town deli that everyone grew up with, so we can still do that, but with this tremendous space, we can begin to expand and roll this into a few things, providing a quality deli, a small scale bakery, and all the things people have come to love at Adrienne’s that may not have been approachable to some, and do it in an approachable way. We can employ more kids locally and provide quality products and use this as an incubator to launch our homemade products for wholesale by doing it right in our backyard.”
After renovations, Adrienne’s Provisions has a much different look than All American Channel Market. With art on the walls and music playing in the background, Provisions has the feel of Adrienne’s, plus the signature orange striped umbrella out front that indicates they’re open for business. With much more wide-open space, it doesn’t serve as a grocery store to do your shopping for the week, but you can grab things like bottled olive oil and balsamic, boxed pastas and fresh bread on a center table. Plus, you can pick up essentials like milk, eggs, butter, barbecue needs, condiments, a few produce items and sodas from the fridge. The deli counter in the back, featuring signature sandwiches, cold cuts, side salads and soon, breakfast, is the main drawing point. A coffee station offers espresso drinks, regular coffee and cold brew on tap. A gelato station with flavors like rainbow cookie, s’mores, pistachio and more, has already been a big draw for neighborhood kids, who enjoy a scoop or two at the table in front.
The owners say although they’re offering some similar items to Adrienne’s restaurant, Provisions is meant to complement what’s already great. “We don’t have lunch sandwiches at the restaurant so the whole deli section is something completely different. Plus, this gives us an opportunity to reach more people. Grabbing gelato and Rigatoni Bolognese to go is a lot different than coming to sit down in the restaurant,” Keegan said. “This gets more eyes on our brand.”
And so far, it’s working. Keegan said, “Since we opened, it’s been great. It’s awesome to see customers from the neighborhood and it’s been cool to see new faces that we haven’t seen at the restaurant, but we’re now seeing at the store.”
