When Margaret Powers and Paul King took over as publishers of The Rockaway Times in June, they said they were “doubling down on Rockaway” with the intent of bolstering the community and its local businesses. Rockaway Time was always part of the plan.
“A thriving community needs successful businesses, not empty storefronts,” King said. “Rockaway has come so far in terms of the variety and viability of our businesses, but many are still dependent on the summer surge.” Powers added, “Every summer, millions of visitors flock to the Rockaways. That is a firehose of money into our peninsula, but most visitors only know the area close to the beach they frequent. Rockaway has so much more to offer.” The app will help connect those visitors with our neighborhood businesses.
Rockaway Time is also meant to be a resource for locals. “When we were building the app, I can’t tell you how many times I said, ‘I didn’t know about that place’ and I’ve lived my whole life in Rockaway,” Powers said.
The app, which features a bike and surfboard logo reminiscent of The Rockaway Times, has six main sections: Activities, Events, Eat & Drink, Stays, Shop, and Real Estate. The menu bar also has links to popular beaches, an interactive map, and a “Best Of” section. The app currently links to more than 100 local businesses and scores of upcoming events.
Business entries include links to websites, social media and, for select restaurants, online ordering. “Whether it is for ordering food to the beach or planning a date at the end of a beach day, Rockway Time will funnel that demand to our local businesses,” King said. “It really is a roadmap to having a great time in Rockaway.”
The extensive events listing pulls from the Rockaway Good Times section that is published in the newspaper every week but extends much further into the future. “I think the Activities section will be an eye-opener for many, including locals,” Powers said. “Sometimes we forget how much Rockaway has to offer, whether it is sailing, yoga, all sizes of golf, or ways to be pampered at a spa.”
Rockaway Time is not just for summer. It will be updated year-round. Future versions will include features (e.g. a scavenger hunt) that locals and off-season visitors can enjoy.
While Rockaway Time is brought to you by The Rockaway Times, it is not a newspaper app. You can get the news you need on newsstands every Thursday and on our website, www.rockawaytimes.com. Rockaway Time is available for both iPhone and Android devices. You can download it for free from Google Play or the Apple Store or scan the QR code.
