Jamesons Pub was crowded Monday evening, August 10, as 60 people turned out to hear the results of the first annual Belle Harbor Property Owners Association (BHPOA) Garden and Home Beautification Contest. More than 20 homes were recognized for specific features like best roses, best hydrangeas, or best patriotic theme. Three homes won awards and gift certificates in the Most Outstanding Garden category.
The top overall winner was the Egan home on the corner of Beach 131st Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Second place went to the Murphy home on the 100 block of Beach 134th Street. Third place was claimed by the Gilmartins on the 200 block of Beach 141. Every homeowner who was celebrated received a custom certificate and a BHPOA Award Winner lawn sign.

One of the notable special category winners was the Burns home across the street from Egan’s. This corner property had been untended for several years and was considered an eyesore. Now it has been transformed into what was called “one of the most eye-catching corner homes in Rockaway.” Accordingly, it earned recognition for Home and Garden Transformation. Another popular selection was the home of Monsignor John Bracken whose property “reflects years of care, pride and dedication – a true Garden Legacy.” Father Jim Cunningham attended the ceremony to root for his colleague.
After its successful Christmas and Hanukkah Decorating contest last December, BHPOA leaders were asked to consider a garden contest in the summer. With the approval of the leadership team, Chrystie Rasmussen formed a committee with Jamie Hearn, Diane Perrotta, Michelle DeBoer, Moira Mullen, Margaret Powers and Steve Gilmarten. The committee accepted nominations from the neighborhood, created scoring criteria, and deployed judges. The months-long effort culminated in Monday’s ceremony. Despite a powerful thunderstorm that began minutes before, scores of residents attended. The audience represented all ages. Rasmussen said, “I really enjoyed working with everyone and seeing how much pride people take in their homes and gardens.”
