A June 7 New York Post story about Rockaway’s “Death Jetties” said they’ll be removed in November. “I’m deeply saddened it’s taken this long for them to remove [them],” said Yenesnia Rodriguez, whose brother died after a jetty incident in 2019.

If the New York Knicks beat the Spurs, they will have one-upped the New York Rangers. In 1994, the City’s hockey team ended a 54-year championship drought. This year, the Knicks have a 53-year drought. Regardless, both playoff runs were glorious.

Science is an ever-growing school subject. Rockaway’s Julia Courtney is at Florida State University. Her recent project is about how quorum sensing helps bacteria regulate biofilm formation, virulence, and antimicrobial production. We don’t know what that means but suspect it could save lives some day. Go Julia!

Flag Day is this Sunday. At Callie’s, Lt. James O’Brien of Beach 130th Street will be honored. James was a pilot who died heroically in WWII. You do not have to attend the RRC event to honor Lt. O’Brien. The event begins at 2:00 and the ceremony will occur around 3 p.m.

World Cup comes to NY this week. For soccer (“football”) fans, it’s like the NFL and NBA Playoffs rolled into one. Believe it or not, soccer was huge in NYC 50 years ago. When the NY Cosmos signed Pele, it was like bringing the Babe Ruth or Elvis Presley of soccer to America.

The Rockaway Film Festival is getting in the football mood. On Saturday at the Arverne Cinema, they have a screening of “Zidane,” who was a huge star for France… though he did get ejected from his final World Cup game for headbutting an opponent.
