This month, we celebrated a wonderful milestone: America 250. September will bring a somber milestone: The 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attack that impacted so many families in Rockaway. We must memorialize our stories so that future generations know what happened that day and how Rockaway responded. As we start to plan our coverage of the anniversary, we’d like to hear from you. Next Tuesday, August 4, is National Night Out. The 100th Precinct will hold its event in the Beach 94-95 Street parking lot from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. The 101st will hold its event in the O’Donohue Park from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

This year, parishioners at St. Camillus shocked church observers by saving their vital parish in Rockaway Beach. Across the bridge, St. Virgilius is equally vital to Broad Channel and can use a major boost in attendance. Masses are Saturdays at 4 p.m. and Sundays at 10 a.m.

The annual Redfern Family Day was a wonderful success on Saturday, July 25. Nine organizations shared resources with the residents. Seven volunteers served food.

Tomorrow marks the official beginning of Carnival season in Rockaway. The Queens Carnival Pop-Up, a preview of the big annual event, will bring rich culture, music, food, art, costumes, and community partnerships to Beach 21st Street Plaza, starting at 4 p.m.

The first Lincoln penny was minted this week in 1909. The final Lincoln penny was minted last November. Despite signs in banks warning of an impending penny shortage, there are still 114 billion in circulation.

Rockaway Beach Civic Association’s August meeting will be a Meet & Mingle at Caracas on the boardwalk at the Beach 106 Street concession. Join them at 6:00 p.m. All are invited. In the event of rain, an alternate plan will be announced.
