Next Wednesday, we will be celebrating our 10th anniversary! Yes, The Rockaway Times is 10 years old. We published our first edition on Thursday, June 26, 2014! We will be publishing our 10th anniversary edition next Thursday, June 27, 2024. Time flies when you are having fun. Thank you, as always, to our awesome advertisers who have remained loyal in these 10 years. Without them, we could not have put out this FREE paper each week for the last 10 years! Please support them and when you do, tell them you saw their ad in The Rockaway Times. And speaking of our terrific advertisers, if you are not already in, and want to be in next week’s 10th anniversary edition, please let Mary know at Mary@rockawaytimes.com  or call our office at 718-634-3030 ASAP.

Some of you may have noticed that The Rockaway Times has not been delivered in our normal clear bags. Unfortunately, they are currently out of stock. In the meantime, they will either be delivered with a rubber band (weather permitting) or in a circular bag. While we work to solve the problem, please be sure to look in your circular bags and make sure that there is not a Rockaway Times in it. We have heard of a few instances where people, er, do whatever they do with the circulars and think they have been missed by The Rockaway Times. We hope to have this problem fixed in the coming weeks, so please bear with us.

This past weekend and all throughout this week, locals Sean Green and Tess Howley have been competing at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials for the chance to represent U.S.A. in Paris this summer. So far, both swimmers have posted impressive times amongst the star-studded field. Green accomplished the huge achievement of making the 800m freestyle finals — the youngest competitor in the finals field of eight — and came up just short of making the Olympics. Both swimmers still have more races to come, so tune in to NBC and Peacock and support our local pool prodigies.

After Monsignor Richard Ahlemeyer passed away a few weeks ago, it was announced last week that Rev. James Rodriguez is the new administrator for the St. Camillus-St. Virgilius Parish. We don’t have to welcome Rev. Rodriguez to the peninsula as he is already acting as the administrator for St. Rose of Lima Parish, but we wish him the best of luck.

Councilwoman Joann Ariola’s office is having a pet supply drive to assist pets in need. Her office is accepting pet food, pet carriers, and other supplies throughout the summer to help the burden placed on local rescues. If you can help, you can drop off at her office Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Our local animals and pet rescues would very much appreciate it.
