School has just begun but for elementary school seniors, eyes are already turning to next year. For both public and parochial schools, the high school selection process begins in October with open houses and applications. Ahead of that process, St. Francis de Sales hosted a Catholic High School Fair in the gymnasium Monday evening, September 21.
Hundreds of students and their parents attended the fair. More than 15 high schools participated, including Cathedral Prep, Chaminade, Christ the King, Cristo Rey, Fontbonne, Holy Cross, La Salle, The Mary Louis Academy, McClancy, Molloy, Nazareth, Sacred Heart, St. Edmund Prep, St. Francis Prep, St. Mary’s Prep, Xavier, and Xaverian. Most had current students as well as an admissions representative on hand to distribute materials and tell prospective applicants about their programs.
The Rockaway Times will have two education issues (October 8 and October 15) to discuss the high school selection process and to present options for local students. Students who wish to attend Catholic high school must take the Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools (TACHS) on November 7. Open houses at individual schools will occur during October.
Public school students are not required to take a test unless they intend to apply to a Specialized High School (e.g. Stuyvesant). Applications for all NYC public high schools will open on October 6.
