Friday Night -12:01 Saturday morning -warning: Parking restrictions go into effect once the clock strikes midnight and you know some ticket writers love to nab you minutes after the restrictions go in place. Move your car or wake up with a costly note on the windshield. The parking rules begin May 15 and run through September 30.

Procrastinators of the world unite, tomorrow! That old joke reminds us to remind you that Monday, May 17 is the deadline to file your federal and state taxes. Because of the pandemic, the usual deadline of April 15 was extended a month and because May 15 falls on a Saturday you get an extra couple of days.

Jesse Funtleyder got a nice write up in a John Jay College publication after joining CUNY Service Corps, which gave him the opportunity to help rebuild homes in Puerto Rico after Hurricanes Irma and Maria. He and his family were uprooted after Hurricane Sandy so he knew firsthand just how important it is to pitch in and help others. The experience in Puerto Rico, he said, “is the single most priceless and fulfilling thing I’ve ever done in my life.” Looks like Jesse is also building a strong foundation as a mental health counselor, which is his goal.

Even though it seems like this spring is not quite spring, a lot of spring sprucing up is going on. This is a shout to the many civics and volunteers who consistently go above and beyond to give Rockaway a brighter shine. There are too many to mention but just know, your efforts are appreciated!

The annual Rockaway Times & Summer Guide will be published Thursday, May 27. As usual, it will have lots of useful information and with the great response by so many businesses it will serve as a business directory through the year. It’s our biggest Summer Guide yet which tells us Rockaway is poised for a banner summer and beyond. The Guide will be distributed from Memorial Day through the 4th of July.

On Saturday, May 22nd ‘The Graybeards’ in partnership with ‘The RIBS’ are sponsoring a food drive to help stock the various food pantries throughout the Rockaways. Blue collection bags are being distributed this weekend. If you don't receive a blue bag, you can put your donations in any plastic bag.

And speaking of social media, two mayoral candidates who haven’t attracted much attention got plenty the other day. Shaun Donovan (former Secretary of HUD) and Ray McGuire, a wealthy former Citigroup executive were each asked for the median home price in Brooklyn. Donovan said $100,000 and McGuire guessed $80 or $90,000. The answer? $900,000. Donovan later said he was talking about the assessed value. Does anyone talk about the assessed value when asked to guess home prices? Well, at least they got publicity.
