Early voting starts, Saturday, June 12. Rockaway’s early voting site is the YMCA on Beach 73rd Street.

In many City Council primaries, there’s a clear favorite. District 32 (Eric Ulrich is term limited) really does seem up in the air with Mike Scala, Felicia Singh, Kaled Alamarie, Helal Sheikh, and Bella Matias looking to win the Dem primary. On the Republican side, Joann Ariola faces Steve Sirgiovanni. Joann has the backing of Ulrich; Steve has the backing of former congressman, Bob Turner. The general election in November will be closely contested and closely watched – it’s one of the few council districts in the city that Republicans stand a chance.

In last week’s paper, we had that great drone shot of the beach showing how jetties really do catch sand and make the beaches bigger. In the caption, we said the drone looking east but we meant west! We have north and south down cold but sometimes east and west mixes us up! Great photo no matter which way we thought we were looking.

It’s in July but there's another sign that the news normal is looking more and more like the old normal. The Thrilla In Camilla, a boxing exhibition at St. Camillus, which benefits an organization that builds mortgage-free homes for wounded veterans that need special accommodations, is back on, Friday, July 16. We’ll have more details in the weeks ahead.

Did you know Riis Park doubled the parking fee to $20 bucks? We don’t know if people were surprised when they pulled up to the booth but it didn’t stop the huge parking lot from almost filling up last weekend when temperatures hit the 90s.

*****

Speaking of the parking lot, the Marine Parkway Bridge and Beach Channel Drive were like parking lots as traffic inched along because of the backup trying to get into Riis. Someone had a pretty good idea about collecting parking fees on the way out. Let cars in without stopping and paying to alleviate traffic and then the backups would be later and be confined to the lot. The idea has some merit but the pay-on-the-way-out would mean having fee collectors there all night and some people would claim they lost their wallet in the ocean or spent all their money at the concessions.

And still speaking of Riis, we reached out to the National Park Service regarding the Rockaway Volleyball League and well, there’s not too much to report. “We are working with the league to get them up and running.” We hope so!

The Tribeca Film Festival is coming to Rockaway. The annual event is hosting Borough to Borough, an effort to bring films to all the boroughs. The Rockaway Beach 30th Street Playground (just off the boardwalk) will be an outdoor movie venue starting tonight, June 10 and running through Sunday, June 13. Nine different movies are scheduled – rain or shine! – and tickets are free but you’ve got to reserve them online. You can get the list of movies, times and other information at www.tribecafilm.com/festival/live-events/borough-to-borough

With things coming alive again (Rockstock and Barrels Fest for one) we will again offer Rockaway Good Times, a weekly feature of all things fun happening in Rockaway and we’re especially happy to say Kami-Leigh Agard will be back bringing it all together.
