It might not be a word, but this summer's weather is underratedly bad.

And then there were ten. At the start, we had to consider more than 1,300 photos which were submitted to the (fantastic!) Rockaway Times Photo Contest and after many rounds, nine judges eventually settled on a Top 30 and those photos were made poster-sized and placed on the boardwalk railing around Beach 95th Street. Next, we had the nearly impossible task of selecting the ten best. Our Facebook page has more than 20,000 followers so we asked them to help. From Facebook and original judge selections we now have a Top 10 (see page 19). The winner will be chosen on Friday, July 30. Stay tuned!

Rippers will be rocking. Although music has been limited so far this summer, the Wild Yaks will make up for some of it this Saturday starting at 5 p.m. See Marina’s story on Page 16.

Some more proof that the worker shortage is real. Elegante Pizzeria will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays for the time being because they just can’t find people to take the shifts.

After an uproar over a proposed ramp/walkway design in Neponsit and Belle Harbor, State Senator Joe Addabbo issued a statement: "While I appreciate the efforts of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), I would urge them to consider the concerns of my constituents with regards to the concrete path and cross-over ramp proposals, as they continue to move forward with other aspects of the project improvements. I believe the proposed path and ramp warrant reconsideration. I share the valid concerns of my constituents and know that the issues related to the ramp and path, such as safety, must be evaluated, along with other reasonable alternatives. I look forward to working with my colleagues on all levels of government, the USACE and residents to expeditiously address this matter."

You never know what battles might be fought online. Maurice Murphy has been raving about New Park Pizza in Broad Channel. Others are insistent that the place is in Howard Beach. We’ve sent out a team or reporters to get to the bottom of this.

Grogan Memorial Schoolyard, and includes food, beverages, children's activities, awards, raffles, and live music. In person registration is available at St. Francis on July 24, 10-12, July 25 10-1, July 29 6-8, and on the day of the race, July 30 4-6.  Please see the ad on Page 10 for info.

The Cristin Mullen run is Saturday, July 17. Cristin was diagnosed with epilepsy in 2008. It did not deter her from living an active full life until she passed on December 17, 2020.  From CYO at St Francis de Sales to Bishop Kearney to Iona to St Francis College she competed with great passion. See Pages 13 and 15 for info.

The bureaucracy of so many city agencies is just disheartening. We echo the sentiments of those who are frustrated by the State Liquor Authority’s dillydallying. The concessions (other than Beach 97th) are still waiting for SLA’s approval. It’d be nice to have a sangria at Caracas; a beer at Rippers.
