So Governor Cuomo gave a two week notice (thanks to Patrick Goldberg for that). Congratulations and best of luck to the next governor, Kathy Hochul (rhymes with local).

Kathy: End the toll on the Cross Bay Bridge!

Riis Park is in shambles. Photos on Pages 14-15-16 show just how run down it is. This is not about maintenance. Seasonal and permanent staff do what they can. It’s the structural state of things. Part of the neglect is because Riis doesn’t have a real constituency to demand better. Visitors are mostly from Brooklyn and other parts of the city. They come, they go, and maybe they don’t come back. Or they do, but how often? They’re unlikely to contact elected officials about the sorry state of the place. Rockaway residents, with their own beach, find there’s no reason to go. And if they want, where do they complain? Who is in charge? We say start with Senator Charles Schumer. He bikes through there; he knows the place. He’s shepherding a huge infrastructure bill to be signed by President Biden. Get on it, Chuck.

Update on the yacht in the bay. As we mentioned last week, a yacht anchored in the middle of the bay off Beach 132nd Street caught the attention of quite a few people. Our marine reporters were unavailable to sail out and investigate but after some groundside sleuthing, we found out the vessel owner is Kevin Moriarty, cousin to Bernadette Mahoney, Carolyn Coogan and Stacey Tubridy. Reports say he brought his yacht so his cousins could enjoy a day of fun. It was loaded with all sorts of water toys and a good time was had by all.

The Shorebird Festival is Saturday. August is the perfect time to explore the diversity and abundance of NYC's shorebirds, particularly at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. This Saturday, August 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the 16th Annual Shorebird Festival will include guided bird walks around the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and activities outside of the refuge visitor center. With expert guides and family-friendly walks, this festival will be fun for everyone. Please register so that the American Littoral Society, Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, and National Parks Service can plan and send updates. The east end of the Rockaway peninsula has a low vaccination rate. Mayoral candidate Eric Adams and others came out last week to promote vaccination. News being what it is, the failures and horror stories get the headlines but expecting 100% safety is impossible; no medical product or intervention, from aspirin to brain surgery, is ever 100% safe. Science shows getting the Covid vaccine outweighs the risks. Mumps, measles, chicken pox, polio. Vaccines work!
