Happy Veteran’s Day. Thank you for your service and sacrifices. (It cannot be overstated how important veterans are to this country and our way of life).

Tomorrow, November 12 is the 20th anniversary of the crash of Flight 587 in Belle Harbor. It was a terrible and terrifying event that occurred as the community was dealing with the aftermath of 9/11. Two hundred and sixty people aboard the flight were killed and five Rockaway residents were killed in their homes. We hope the best for families and friends who still mourn those who died that day.

The passing of Lew Simon was a shock for many. The extent of his illness was not widely known. It’s too bad Lew himself is not around to hear and see all the good things being said about the one-of-a-kind Rockaway cheerleader and advocate. Countless people have remarked how he helped them. Lew was also a character and let people know it with his bullhorn and irrepressible personality. And he made an impression beyond the shores of the peninsula.

Mayor de Blasio said, “We’re mourning a true New York City original today,” and Mayor-elect Eric Adams said, “Lew Simon’s dedication to improving Queens was deep, and I’m so sorry to have lost a dear friend.” Once, when Lew was told he’d gotten some negative press, he turned it right around and said: “Every knock’s a boost!”

You may want to update your resume and become familiar with the website before applying. A limited number of applications are accepted for each vacancy, so it's best to apply as early as possible.

Michelle Raaf Chiusano, a lifelong local, wrote her first children's book called "Champ's Day Out." In the story, Champ the dog will take you on a walk around our town. You'll see Rockaway Beach staples like our beautiful boardwalk, the hockey rink and the Sandpiper Park. You can find the book on sale now on Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Waterstone. Thank you for supporting a local first-time author. We hope you enjoy it.

We're thrilled to report Lauren Marten finished the NYC Marathon last Sunday. As detailed in Katie McFadden's story last week, she was running to raise money to cure a type of brain cancer her dad, Ray, is battling. She raised more than $32,000. A bunch of locals completed the course as well. Congratulations to all!
