Eric Ulrich has landed a Senior Advisor position at City Hall under new mayor, Eric Adams. That's gotta be good for Rockaway, right?

Wait, can it be? Is this the end of an era? Although he has threatened to do it many times before, we hear Dan Edwards, the Fedex Man, aka Suntan Dan aka Jocko aka Jack Bauer is retiring from FedEx after 27 years serving Rockaway and Breezy Point. The legendary coach and occasional horse player (he made the cover of the RT a few years back when he earned his way into a Las Vegas extravaganza) might be stepping off the truck for the last time. This guy has delivered more than packages. He delivered good humor and good cheer to customers and delivered from the sidelines as he coached girls soccer while on work breaks. And though mild-mannered he might be, he was also known to chase down kids who egged his truck on Halloween. If he actually does hand in his papers, this Rockaway icon will be missed, at least along the route. Sunny’s retiring but you can bet he’s just getting started. Happy trails, Suntan! And if he keeps working, if this is another false alarm, it’s because he loves his job and the friends he sees along the route.

Lose power on Monday? According to PSEG, “an outage occurred on Monday, Jan. 3, 2022 at 5:34 p.m. and affected 449 customers. At 6:43 p.m., an additional 2,719 customers (Newport Ave. to Rockaway Beach Blvd.) were without power for three minutes as crews repaired the issue. All customers were back in service at 6:46 p.m. The cause of the outage was likely wind-related and is being investigated.”

It’s not easy to get everybody to agree but it’s nice when it happens. The online reaction to Liz Hanna being named The Rockaway Times Person of the Year was met with full approval. Lots of “well-deserved!” Like The Summer Guide, The Photo Contest, and the Sandcastle Contest, The Rockaway Times has a new tradition. Wonder who will get named at the end of 2022….

Did you hear about the woman on an Icelandair flight who voluntarily isolated in the plane bathroom for five hours after testing positive for Covid mid-flight? Well, for her sake, we hope she had one of the common symptoms of Covid and lost her sense of smell, at least for the duration of the flight.

The New York State Independent Redistricting Commission sent redistricting plans to the New York State Legislature. The allegedly bi-partisan commission couldn’t reach agreement on the lines drawn for congress, the state assembly, and state senate so it sent two maps for each. The maps are actually fairly similar, and you’d think with such small differences they would’ve been able to send just one of each (congress, assembly, senate). In any case, both maps have all of Rockaway in one congressional district. The assembly maps split Rockaway at around Beach 108th; the senate maps make Rockaway one senate district. You can bet there will be significant changes once the NYS Legislature gets in the act. If you want a closer look at the proposed maps, go to www.nyirc.gov/plans
