A newspaper isn’t the place where the phrase, “there are no words” makes much sense but it sure seems appropriate when trying to express the deep sadness and shock the community feels in the aftermath of the death of Firefighter Timothy Klein. A young man, just 31, part of well-known much-loved family, Timothy gave his life protecting others. There are no words, but try we must: Thank you, Timothy. Your bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten. May your family somehow find comfort and peace in the knowledge that you were a hero and a credit to them forever.

Speaking of photos, the Top 30 have been selected in the annual Rockaway Times Photo Contest. As usual, it was especially challenging this year and choosing one great shot over another was tough. Some great shots did not make the cut. In some cases, the resolution was too low and therefore wasn’t suitable for when the photos are enlarged to poster size. Thanks to all who submitted: you make the contest great!

Wow and hooray. Connolly’s, the iconic Rockaway Beach bar, will live on. After the place went up for sale (listed at $6 million) some 18 months ago, there was great concern that the home of the frozen would be just another condo development. Turns out, the guys from Locals Surf School had other ideas. After months and months of negotiations, owners Jeff and Kerryann made a deal and Mike Kololyan and Mike Reinhardt will now add Connolly’s to their growing business ventures. Congratulations and good luck to all!

Ed Mallon, who runs a writers’ group, Rockaway Pens, has really put the pen to paper and now has a book to boast. Thebes 338 B.C.E. is a historical novel set in ancient times told in the first-person by the young poet Aristedes. Alexander the Great, King Philip of Macedomia and other notables make appearances in this story built around the intrigue, struggle for love and power in the royal court of kings.” You can order the book on Amazon and at other outlets.

Vrroom! Former 100th Precinct Commander Inspector Scott Olexa got some media attention last week, unveiling the NYPD’s newest all-electric vehicle at the NY International Auto Show. Now Commanding Officer of the Fleet Services Division, Olexa personally test drove the fully loaded 2022 Mustang GT Mach E, which gets 270 miles per charge and goes from 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds. It’s one of some 100 eco-friendly e-squad cars to be deployed by summer. No word on when/if any will be roaming Rockaway!

Maybe a sporting goods store will come to Rockaway one of these days. In the meantime, the SportsDepot in Long Beach is a fantastic option. Owner Sam Gold has been running the place since 2000 (after a stint in Howard Beach) and he’s got every sport and every uniform covered. Check out sportsdepot.com or stop by 36 E. Park Avenue.
