The annual Summer & Community Guide is out this week. We had an outstanding response from advertisers who believe in us and the Rockaway community. Somehow, we were able to put together a 120-page magazine. Just like the weekly newspaper, The Rockaway Times Summer Guide is free and will be available throughout the peninsula.

Longtime NYC Parks official, Liam Kavanagh, has retired. Kavanagh held top jobs, including Parks Commissioner (twice in an “acting commissioner capacity) and was a regular visitor to Rockaway and was known to face some very hostile crowds at Community Board and civic neetings when he was giving updates on boardwalk reconstruction after Sandy and walkways and dunes in Belle Harbor and Neponsit. Away from the crowds, he could also be spotted visiting and checking on the condition of parks throughout the peninsula. We even spotted him, on an off day, enjoying Rockaway with his grandchildren. To be sure, he led Parks through turbulent times here. One thing for sure, one of his best moves was his support for The Rockaway Times Photo Contest! Happy trails, Liam.

And happy trails to Joe Addabbo. The New York State Senator will no longer represent Rockaway as redistricting has forced him to plan a run for a senate district on the mainland. State Senator James Sanders Jr. will now rep the entire peninsula.

Speaking of redistricting, former presidential candidate, Bill de Blasio, saw an opportunity to jump into a congressional race in Brooklyn after the new district lines were announced.

The City Planning Commission unanimously approved the rezoning plan for Arverne East / Edgemere which will transform the long-vacant beachfront lots and is supposed to bring retail, housing, a nature preserve and more in an ecological-friendly and resiliency-based manner. Some months back, Community Board 14 voted against the rezoning. The City Council will review the plan next.

No wise cracks, please. The official beach opening is Saturday, May 28 with lifeguards on duty daily, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until Sunday, September 12. Swimming is strictly prohibited at all other times. Officials will gather the day before, on Friday, May 27, to celebrate the opening at a ceremony on Beach 17th Street and the boardwalk at 11 a.m.

We were shocked to hear the sudden news of Rob Romas' passing on Tuesday, May 24. He was known by many in Rockaway, especially for his online "Rockaway Archie" personality. Our thoughts are with the Romas family and his wife, Kirsten.

ROCKAWAY RIDES (RR) just might be the ticket. Maybe you’ve seen the unique looking vehicles? RR represents a potential public private partnership between Circuit Rides and The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority to provide FREE or affordable electric shuttle van service throughout the transportation deserts in the Rockaways. The service will provide short rides within the confines of the Rockaways (maybe between bars!). At this point, it’s only a potential service because it’s vying for a grant in the New York Clean Transportation Prizes program. Check out rockawayrides.com for more info and to add your comments.
