Eight years ago, on June 26, 2014, The Rockaway Times published its inaugural issue. We are so grateful for the community for backing us all along. We love living here and we’ve run our paper trying to reflect our affection for this one-of-a-kind place. The support we’ve received is appreciated beyond words.

Casey Skudin, just few days before turning 46, of Rockaway’s Ladder 137/ Engine 268, was killed when a tree fell on the SUV he and his family were in while visiting the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. A windstorm caused the tree to fall. His wife and two sons survived, with injuries. Casey was a member of the Skudin family, who many know through surfing and swimming. Our hearts go out to his family and friends.

We fear last week’s drownings won’t be the last. Among things we’d like to see: Riis Park should have a swimming pool (where lifeguards and would-be lifeguards could train). Lifeguards should be on duty from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. (not 10-6). Swimming and water safety programs should be part of school curriculum. PEP officers, on ATVs, should be trained to use and carry Rescue Cans and other emergency equipment.

The Paul King for Congress campaign will hold a rally/party at Knights of Columbus Hall (333 Beach 90 Street) on Sunday, June 26 from 2-6 p.m. There is no charge for admission. This event will include music from Lou Pastina & the Graytrippers and Winston McBoogie, a pig roast, and a magician and face painting for children. Free and paid food options will be available. Special guest speakers will be Joe Pinion, candidate for the United States Senate, and Tom Sullivan, candidate for the New York State Assembly and Breezy Point resident.

Look up: it’s a bird. The MTA announced that a healthy peregrine falcon chick has been hatched and joined its falcon mom in a specially built nesting box atop the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge. The fluffy hatchling, who enjoys 360-degree views of the city skyline from its perch atop the 215-foot Rockaway tower, was recently banded for wildlife monitoring, as happens every year. Each year, research scientist Chris Nadareski, of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, climbs to the top of the bridges and puts identifying bands on the falcon chicks.

Need a place to stay over in Rockaway? A houseboat goes for $810 a night, a five-bedroom house in Arverne goes for $859 a night ($1493 a night for Christmas through New Years’s), and a guest house in Neponsit for $295 a night in the off-season (it’s already booked for the summer at a much higher rate). Those are just some of the hundreds, (hundreds!) of AirBnB listings on the Rockaway peninsula.

Many of you know (or at least recognize) Owen Loof aka The Best Dressed Man In Rockaway. Well, next time you see him, ask him when his book is coming out. He’s worked hard on a book that is fiction but based upon a lot of true events when he grew up in Rockaway and went to Brooklyn Prep.
