So, we posted a video of a spinner shark or blacktip (at least that’s what the consensus was from shark aficionados) and the video and story about beach closing went viral and was even picked up by papers in the U.K. The Daily Mirror headline blared: Incredible moment SHARK leaps out of the sea and spins off Queens! Just a few days later the Daily Telegraph amped it up a bit: The US is in the grip of a shark panic amid a sharp rise in attacks and sightings…. beaches were closed after a video shared by the Rockaway Times showed a purported great white leaping through the air a few meters from shore. (A great white?!! Huh? Also, not sure we have the power to shut down beaches, but we do have a big Facebook following!)

Yes, sharks have always been here. We got a big kick out of this report in The Brooklyn Eagle printed in 1934:….”Bernard Levinson of 141-10 Cronston Ave…spotted a shark in the surf near his home a few days ago. The scavenger was barely ten feet from the shore and the outlines of his body could be seen clearly. Before a policeman could take a shot at it, the shark headed out to sea.”

The waters around Rockaway are cleaner than they have been in decades. A local who used to be a lifeguard– way back¬ when– reminds us that you often couldn’t see your hands in the water (never mind your feet) and sometimes you’d come out with a brownish film all over your skin. Well, The Clean Water Act from the 1970s and other measures helped transform the ocean and bay. Now, more fish, more bait, more dolphins, and more sharks are enjoying (well, maybe the bait for a short time) the clean water.
