If you are feeling a bit stuck and tired of the same old thing, I can assure you, you are not alone. The good thing is we are now in February, that much closer to spring and summer. As I write this column, we are in a winter storm and I know how lucky I am to be in a warm, cozy home. My heart goes out to the essential workers who continue to plow through work every day, regardless of weather, Covid, or anything else that makes it difficult to go to work. Please know we are forever grateful for your selfless service.
As I look out my window, there is a gentleman making a pass with his snow blower. Every time there is a snowstorm, he comes from a few blocks away and clears our pathway. He is a retired Marine and NYPD officer. Always in service and expects nothing in return. Thank you, Mike, your good deeds do not go unnoticed.
My way out of feeling stuck is to simply acknowledge, sit with it and be ok with not being 100%. I set my goals to move out of this funk by practicing some self-care routines. The following are some tools I have used to help shift my perspective from negative to positive. The first step is to be grateful.
Naturally, yoga is at the top of my list. It is the ultimate release for mind, body and soul. Moving your body with a focus on your breath. On this snow day, we are grateful for virtual livestream and Paulette has guided the most beautiful gentle class from her bedroom with her friendly cat, Tuna. It is absolutely perfect and everyone in the virtual room is ready to start their day with some optimism. We are taught a compassion mudra that brings us calm and peace, encouraging us to be compassionate to ourselves. Grateful for this special community. It has saved many of us! Thank you!
Massages release tension in your body and feels amazing. We have some of the best massage therapists here in Rockaway Beach. They take all the necessary precautions to make you feel safe and whole. I highly recommend this form of therapy to help your body and mind release that which no longer serves you. Grateful for massages!
Reiki is a form of energy healing and lifts the heaviness within. Today in yoga we started with a self-reiki session and it felt simply divine to lay our hands over specific parts of our body. We have the ability to heal with reiki.
Meditation clears my head and gives me clarity. Sitting quietly, becoming present with this moment and allowing the thoughts to quiet by learning to bear witness to everything. It is not always pleasant but it is a practice that will help heal and calm the brain. Helping to clear the lenses of your eyes to create a path of serenity. Somehow it shifts our emotions and allows for positive energy to flow. As you empty your head, you become full of gratitude. We reside in a space that provides security and strength. As we receive the benefits of meditation, we begin to offer our peace to the world.
May you live with peace, May you be healthy, May you be free of suffering. Thank you for reading this column. It’s not always easy to find positive thoughts but I keep trying!
