Letting Go

Are we human beings having a spiritual experience or are we spiritual beings having a human experience? The hardest thing for a human to do is to let go. Let go of attachments, resentments, expectations, grudges, emotions and pain. Repeating the mantra, LET GO, again and again has been beneficial in my practice on and off the yoga mat. Releasing habitual patterns that are harmful to your well-being will open you up to an awakened state of equanimity. 

“Let go of the ways you thought life would unfold; the holding of plans or dreams or expectations- Let it all go. Save your strength to swim with the tide.”- Danna Faulds. This is one of my favorite quotes reminding me to simply let go. Allow the flow of life to happen and become the witness with no judgements or hard feelings. I am not suggesting not to fight for what is yours but rather take a step back and decide what do you really want and need in your life today? We often fight to hold on to what is no longer necessary in our lives. 

            There is story about the Dalai Lama being asked if he had any regrets in life. He responded that he felt responsible for the death of an elderly monk who had come to him for guidance. When asked how he dealt with his feelings of regret, His Holiness replied, “I didn’t get rid of it. It’s still there but it no longer drags me down.” It has motivated him to keep working to benefit people in every way he can. There is greater wisdom than learning from life’s experiences and using them to better the world. 

We are here to take care of one another. To help people who feel loss and are in despair. There has always been a great deal of suffering in the world and we can be of service by opening our hearts to those less fortunate than ourselves. In the Bhavagad Gita, there is a passage, “Your right is to action alone; Never to its fruits at any time; Never should the fruits of action be your motive; Never let there be attachment to inaction within you.” Learning to let go allows you to release physically, mentally, and psychologically. Do the work with no expectations. No rewards, recognition, thanks. Whatever positive good deeds you do will come to you in a multitude of ways.

When I come to my meditation seat, it is a refuge for letting go of my worries, anxieties, thinking and holding on to ideas. If I sit in silence with no agenda but to be still and allow whatever comes up to simply be then I find my peace. I am happy, content and so grateful for this precious moment. My practice of yoga is all about letting go. With every exhale I yield, surrender and release that which doesn’t serve me or anyone else. I am a student for life.
