Floyd Bennett Field Closed

Floyd Bennett Field has been closed to the public as it will now operate as a “makeshift bus storage facility,” according to a report in The City, an independent nonprofit news outlet.

While The MTA operates under reduced schedules, the agency has a newfound need to temporarily store buses because their regular depots are full. The MTA said it will vacate the park when the City buses return to regular service schedule.

This part of Gateway National Park had been attracting a lot of visitors seeking open, outdoor areas during the coronavirus crisis. Bicyclists, walkers, birdwatchers, kayakers, gardeners and others will have to seek other options for the time being.

Gateway National said in a statement that “Only those on official business will be permitted to enter. We will notify the public when we resume full operations and provide update on our website www.nps.gov/gate and social media channels @GatewayNPS. Updates about NPS operations will be posted on www.nps.gov/coronavirus. Please continue to visit our website www.nps.gov/gate for specific details about park operations.

Fort Tilden and Riis Park remain open. These facilities have also been heavily used for this time of year. Last Saturday, the Riis Park parking lot had hundreds of cars as people from all over sought respite and fresh air.
