Summer may be over but ROCK! AWAY! isn’t done yet. Event promoter Max Power’s ROCK! AWAY! Music Fest is back for round two this weekend.
ROCK! AWAY! has been bringing musical talent to the peninsula for multi-day music extravaganzas since 2017. Typically a summer festival, Max Power decided to broaden the ROCK! AWAY! brand and host multiple events throughout the year. Some got a taste of it this summer with the ROCK! AWAY! Summer Fest in July at the Beach 97th Concession. Now this weekend, Power is bringing ROCK! AWAY! back with another three-day music event across three boroughs, with the big show taking place back at the Rockaway Brewing Company (415 Beach 72nd Street) on Saturday, October 16.
Part of this weekend’s event is made possible by a big grant Max Power recently received. Power was recognized with a $5,000 City Artists Corps Grant from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Over the course of three award cycles, more than 3,000 artists will receive $5,000 grants to engage the public with artist activities across New York City’s five boroughs this summer and fall. Artists can use the grant to create new work or a phase of a work, or re-stage preexisting creative activities across any discipline. This grant is supported by the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) as well as Queens Theatre. Power received the grant to continue his ongoing work of bringing live music to Rockaway through the ROCK! AWAY! Music Fest. This weekend will demonstrate the fruits of his labor.
ROCK! AWAY! will kick off in Manhattan on Thursday, October 14 at 7 p.m. Vic Thrill, Hastings 3000, Sex Rays and the Low Rats will be playing at Revision Lounge (219 Avenue B, Manhattan). And on Friday at 8 p.m., the fun heads to Brooklyn with The Black Widows with Hastings 3000, Sex Rays, Low Rats and special guest Wayne Sayres at Brooklyn Music Kitchen (177 Vanderbilt, Brooklyn). Tickets for both shows are $15 at the door or can be purchased in advance at www.RockawayMusicFest.com
The main event will take place in Rockaway itself at the Rockaway Brewing Co. This free music fest starts at noon and goes until 10 p.m. The lineup includes Butter Brain, Black Widows, Sex Rays & Low Rats, Strange Neighbors, HayBaby, Social Creatures, Karabas Barabas, Control The Sound, Shadow Monster and You Want Milk.
After this all-day music fest, keep the party going at The Rockaway Hotel! The after party will take place starting at 8 p.m. on Saturday on the Rooftop of The Rockaway Hotel on Beach 108th Street with DJs Brother Rich and Roland.
“ROCK! AWAY! MUSIC FEST is now a yearly event to help create something strong to draw people further into the off-season of Rockaway, where the money drops off a cliff,” Power said. “I was very lucky to be awarded a grant to help pay for the event in Rockaway and that program is made possible by the New York City Artist Corps as well as some support from Rockaway Drinks and Rockaway Brewing Company, as well as the Rockaway Hotel for hosting our after party and the Rockaway Bazaar for hosting the event.”
