FROM RISE: Be Heard for Community Visioning

RISE (Rockaway Initiative for Sustainability and Equity) is hosting the second design forum for its project Community Visioning in Edgemere on Saturday, January 15, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The forum was originally scheduled to be held in person, but because of the increase in COVID-19 cases related to the Omicron variant, it will now be held via Zoom.

RISE and the Collective for Community, Culture, and Environment (CCCE) cordially invite all Edgemere residents and neighbors from across the Rockaway peninsula to take part in this important and engaging meeting. Come have a say in the development of our community; we want your voices to be heard!

At Forum 1 back on November 13, 2021, participants came up with a long list of potential open-space solutions, including exercise parks, drive-in theaters, outdoor cafes, places to barbeque, solar farms, playgrounds, ice skating, and art spaces. The second forum will focus on identifying what we see as the most important on-the-ground solutions for Edgemere and determining on what vacant lots those uses should be placed. CCCE Adaptive Design Specialist Zehra Kuz will give a presentation that explores these ideas further and on looking at how other communities from across the country and the world have used their vacant lots to bring culture and economic drivers to their neighborhoods. Several activities will help participants identify the solutions that speak to them the most.

Log on to Zoom on January 15 to meet other like-minded folks, learn more about the project, and take part in designing the changes coming to Edgemere. This project cannot be a success without the people who live in the area. We hope to see you there, even if it is on the computer screen.

RISE and CCCE invite all Rockaway students to join because the voices of the youth are just as important as the voices of the adults. Plus, you can receive community service for your participation. Just be sure to talk to a RISE representative before you exit the Zoom meeting.
