Sandy Anniversary Cleanup & Shrub Giveaway

On Saturday, October 16 at 12 p.m., head to the RISE Center (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd) to help with a community cleanup. Participants will receive a free Dwarf "Jellybean" Blueberry Shrub plant to plant around their home. Students can receive community service hours. Register at: www.riserockaway.org/rise/events/ 

 

Riis Park Open House

On Saturday, October 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., head to Riis Park (1423 Rockaway Beach Blvd) to join National Park Service (NPS) Rangers and Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy educators for a look into the many buildings and landscapes that make up Jacob Riis Park. Examine the famous Art Deco Bathhouse and Wise Clock.  Finish your experience with continued discussion with NPS Rangers at a campfire on the beach! NPS Rangers will lead tours at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm. Meet at the Wise Clock.

 

St. Rose Flea Market

On Saturday, October 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., head to St. Rose of Lima (Beach 84th and Shore Front Parkway), shop from local vendors.

 

Betsy’s Bungalow Fall Bazaar

On Saturday, October 16 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., head to Betsy’s Bungalow at 120-05 Newport Ave to shop your heart out from local vendors.

 

ROCK! AWAY! Music Fest

On Saturday, October 16 from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., head to the Beach 97th concession for an all day music fest featuring Butter Brain, Black Widows, Sex Rays & Low Rats, Strange Neighbors, HayBaby, Social Creatures, Karabas Barabas, Control The Sound, Shadow Monster and You Want Milk. In the event of rain, head to the Rockaway Brewing Company on Beach 72nd.

 

Far Rock Cancer & DV Walk

On Sunday, October 17, at 8 a.m., meet at Beach 17th Street and walk to Beach 73rd Street for the 4th Annual Far Rockaway Cancer and Domestic Violence Walk honoring Trina Williams. Free mammogram screenings available. Wear pink or purple. Donations welcome.

 

Raptorama Festival

On Sunday, October 17 at from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to see and celebrate hawks, falcons, eagles, owls, and other birds of prey. Learn about raptor behavior, biology, and migration, as well as where to find many species around the city. Activities include a presentation of live hawks and owls provided by a local rehabilitation center, and a visit to the hawk watch platform at Fort Tilden, Queens

 

Full Hunter’s Moon Hike

On Wednesday, October 20, head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge for a guided hike with a ranger to learn about the Hunter’s Moon. Space will be limited, so register by calling (718) 381-4340.

 

Dance Fitness

On Saturdays at 9 a.m. at Beach 32nd Street and the boardwalk NYC Parks for a free, fun and funky low to medium impact dance fitness class.

 

Cardio Punch

On Saturdays at 11 a.m. at Beach 59th Street Playground, join NYC Parks for a free total body, non-contact workout fit for all levels.

 

Aging Mastery Program

In this free program on Zoom for those 50 and older, learn about: Navigating Longer Life, Sleep, Healthy Eating & Hydration, Exercise & You, Healthy Relationships, Fall Prevention, Community Engagement, Medication Management, Financial Fitness, Advance Planning and more. 10 sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., from Nov. 4- Dec. 14.
