Edgemere Community Visioning Forum #2

On Saturday, January 15 at 10 a.m. on Zoom, RISE will hold the second of three forums as part of the Edgemere Community Visioning Process to engage Edgemere residents and stakeholders in creating a Community Agreement for the use of nearly 60 vacant lots. The goal of this forum is to align goals and identify on the ground solutions. Register at: 


Winter Bird Walk

On Saturday, January 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., join naturalist Don Riepe at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge for a hike around the bonds to look for snowy owls, snow geese, dunlin, nother harrier and other winter birds. 2022 Q&A Vaccine Urgency & Testing

On Saturday, January 15, head to St. John Baptist Church  (74-05 Rockaway Beach Blvd) between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. for a Q&A on vaccines and free walkup PCR Covid testing with results in 48-72 hours. Free masks and sanitizer. Sponsored by Senator James Sanders.



On Saturdays, January 15 and 22 at 3:30 p.m., meet on Beach 81st and the boardwalk for PINE. Pine is an installation conceived out of necessity to mourn in a time of compiling obstacles. It is a magical beach forest of repurposed trashed holiday spirit built from former Xmas trees. This outdoor experience will facilitate public grieving, commemoration, and regeneration during the pandemic, despite freezing temperatures. Dress warm and bring a blanket or beach chair. RSVP at:


The Lenape and

New York

On Sunday, January 16 at 10 a.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge and join rangers as they talk about the Native peoples who have historically and currently live in the New York metropolitan area.   Reservations required, call (718) 318-4340.


MLK Day of Service

On Monday, January 17, the Far Rock Greek Council and the Black Chef Movement will be giving away winter clothes and coats, food, PPE, toys and more from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 1033 Beach 20th Street in Far Rockaway, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King.


Full Wolf Moon Hike

On Monday, January 17 at 5 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge for a night hike. With only the full moon, stars, and a ranger to guide you, you'll set off on a hike around Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Hear about a traditional name for this moon and look for signs of the animal it represents. All ages are welcome. This is an all-weather walk, so please dress for the conditions. Space will be limited, so register by calling (718) 318-4340.


Land Use Committee Meeting
