Broad Channel Beautification Day

Belle Harbor Cleanup

On Saturday, May 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., meet at the beach wall at Beach 134th Street to join the Belle Harbor Property Owners Annual Beach cleanup. They’ll be cleaning the beach from 130th to 141st. Limited bags provided, volunteers recommended to bring their own. Community service hours available.

 

Pups on Parade

On Saturday, May 14 at 12 p.m., head to the Beach 108th Street boardwalk to watch or enter your pet in the inaugural Rockaway Doggie Parade. The parade continues to Beach 92nd Street. There will be judges. Prizes. Dogs. Costumes. Tricks. Water. Treats. Registration is $5 and benefits the Yorkie 911 Rescue. The after pawty with live music, comedy and more will take place at Rockaway Tiki Bar (6720 Rockaway Beach Blvd.)

 

Earth Day Rockaway

On Saturday, May 14 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., head to the RISE Center (58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd.) for a day of free environmental activities and programs for families and kids of all ages. Events include: Live music, a mock dolphin rescue, plantings, composting, face painting, water testing, firesafety and art-related booths to learn how to appreciate and conserve the earth's resources.

 

Full Flower Moon

On Sunday, May 15 at 8 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge for a ranger-led hike around the refuge. Hear about a traditional name for this moon and look for signs of the wildlife it represents. All ages. All-weather walk. Space is limited, so register by calling (718) 318-4340.

 

Land Use and Housing Committee Meeting

Hatha Yoga with Soupy

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting May 9, head to Beach 104th at 8:30 a.m. for yoga on the beach with Kevin Soupy Campbell.

 

Wildflower Wednesdays

Every Wednesday through May 25 at 3 p.m., head to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to embark on a quest to spot and welcome all the blooms that Jamaica Bay has to offer. All ages are welcome. This is an all-weather walk, so dress for the conditions.

Space will be limited, so register by calling 718-318-4320.

 

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Punch

Every Saturday through June 25, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., join at Beach 59th Street and the boardwalk for a free Cardio Punch fitness class presented by NYC Parks. Bring a towel and water.

 

Chair Yoga at the Temple

On Mondays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m., join Christine Walker for Chair Yoga at Ohab Zedek on Beach 135th and Rockaway Beach Blvd. Classes are on a donation basis. For more info, contact Christine at 516-503-4249

 

My Turn Program

Free classes are available to New York state residents age 60 and older through Kingsborough Community College. Audit over 400 classes online, hybrid and in person. Take Classes like art, history, health education, literature, theater, foreign languages, tourism, science and much more. Summer term 6/22 – 8/11.  Application deadline 6/15/22.
