Op-Ed: We Deserve a Debate

Op-Ed: We Deserve a Debate

Participation in public debate should be expected of every candidate seeking public office. Debate is not simply disagreement or an argument, it is a discussion, and that discussion is a fundamental part of the democratic process. Voters deserve to see the candidates for New York State Assembly District 23 stand side by side, answer tough questions, defend their positions, and make their case directly to the people they are asking to represent.

Engaging in public debate is not political theater; it is a responsibility to the voters. After decades of being overlooked by politicians in Albany, our communities deserve more than campaign talking points and empty promises. They deserve straight answers and real solutions to affordability, rising crime, and the lack of transportation and healthcare infrastructure in our communities. They deserve a representative who will show up, listen, and be a passionate advocate for their needs.

So, to put the voters of District 23 first, I am formally inviting my opponent, Pesach Osina, to three public debates ahead of the election. Every voter deserves the opportunity to hear directly from both candidates, ask the questions that matter, and make an informed decision before casting a ballot this fall. There is no substitute for seeing candidates explain their experience and background, defend their positions, and explain what they intend to do for the people of this district.

Across our district, these debates should be accessible, transparent, and open to the public. At least one should be held in the Rockaways or Broad Channel, and at least one should be held on the mainland, including Howard Beach, Lindenwood, Hamilton Beach, or Ozone Park. All three should be held in person and live streamed so residents throughout the district can participate. They should be open to the press and include an open forum for questions from voters, with independent local news or civic organizations organizing or moderating the debates to help ensure a fair and impartial process.

Coming to the debate stage is about our community, not the candidates. This challenge is about putting voters first and showing up for the people we seek to represent. A substantive debate gives residents the opportunity to cut through campaign rhetoric, focus on the issues affecting their families and neighborhoods, and hear firsthand how each candidate would address the challenges facing District 23.

Here is where my opponent has a choice: accept the challenge, commit to all three debates, and let the voters decide for themselves. I am ready to stand before the people of District 23 and put it all on the table. We all deserve a debate.
