Practice Before You Need It

Practice Before You Need It

Every month at Ocean Bliss, we explore a different theme. August’s theme is devotion. When we hear that word, it’s easy to imagine something grand or dramatic. But I don’t think devotion is loud. I think devotion is quiet. It’s a sacred promise we make to ourselves and to something greater than ourselves. It’s found in the small choices we make over and over again.

In my experience, it is often the smallest acts of devotion that create the most profound shifts.

People often come to yoga because life feels stressful, overwhelming, or uncertain. They want to feel better. They want more peace, more strength, more balance. While yoga can certainly offer all of those things, one of the greatest gifts of the practice is that it teaches us to build a foundation before we desperately need it.

I often meet students who tell me they’ve always wanted a consistent yoga practice, but they don’t know where to begin. My advice is almost always the same: don’t commit to practicing every day. Don’t set an impossible standard. Simply choose one class each week and make it a promise to yourself. One class. One hour. One small act of devotion.

Something beautiful happens when we keep that promise. After a few months, many students naturally begin adding a second class each week. Not because they have to, but because they want to. They begin to notice they sleep better, move more freely, respond to stress differently, and feel more connected to themselves. Their practice doesn’t grow from willpower, it grows from experience.

That’s the nature of devotion. It isn’t about perfection or intensity. It is about returning, again and again. Trusting that each small step matters, even when the results aren’t immediately visible.

We don’t practice only for the difficult days. We practice so that when life becomes difficult, as it inevitably does, we have something steady to return to. A familiar breath. A grounded body. A quieter mind. We build resilience before we need it.

This month, I invite you to consider this question: What small promise could you make to yourself today? Not one that feels overwhelming, but one that feels sustainable. One that you can return to with kindness, week after week.

If you’re looking for a place to begin, or to begin again, we would love to welcome you to practice with us at Ocean Bliss. Whether it’s your first class or your hundredth, your mat is always here waiting for you.

And if your devotion to yoga extends beyond your personal practice, our next 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training begins Friday, September 18. Enrollment is now open. You can learn more and register on our website, and if you have any questions, I’d love to talk with you.
