Our theme at Ocean Bliss this month is radiance. It is a beautiful word for summer, especially here in Rockaway, where the light seems to touch everything a little more directly. The ocean is brighter, the days are longer, and we tend to spend more time outside, in our bodies and immersed in the elements.
But the radiance I am interested in is not the kind that comes from being seen from the outside. It is the kind that grows when we start to feel more connected on the inside.
In yoga, we practice returning. Again and again, we return to the breath, to the body, and to the moment we are actually in. We return from the noise of the mind, from the stories we have been carrying, from the many ways we abandon ourselves throughout the day without even realizing it.
The world pulls us outward constantly. Toward our phones, our schedules, our responsibilities, our plans, our comparisons. We can move through an entire day responding to everything around us and never once feel ourselves from within.
Radiance begins with that return.
It can begin in a simple way. A breath that reaches all the way down. A slower morning. A walk by the ocean. A yoga class where the body finally starts to soften. A few moments of stillness after sound. A hand on the heart. A decision to tell the truth instead of swallowing it.
Radiance is not always bright and easy. Sometimes it begins as honesty. Sometimes it begins as exhaustion finally being acknowledged. Sometimes it begins when we stop pretending we are fine and allow ourselves to feel what has been asking for our attention. Sometimes the light comes back after we let something old move through.
This is why radiance is a practice. It is not a mood or a look. It is not something we wait to feel. It is something we make space for through the way we live, breathe, move, listen, rest, speak, and gather.
A person becomes radiant when more of them is allowed to be here. The breath is allowed. The body is allowed. The grief is allowed. The joy is allowed. The truth is allowed. The softness is allowed. The strength is allowed. The quiet is allowed. The voice is allowed.
Yoga gives us a way to practice this. The postures are part of it, but they are not the whole of it. The deeper practice is learning how to live with more awareness. How to notice when we are rushing away from ourselves. How to pause before the old pattern takes over. How to meet the body as a wise messenger instead of something to control.
This summer at Ocean Bliss, I hope the studio becomes part of that return for you.
We have more classes on the schedule and so many ways to practice in community. Our donation-based Sunset Beach Yoga begins on July 2 and continues throughout the summer every Thursday evening on the sand at Beach 126th Street from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. We will also continue offering donation-based and free offerings throughout the month, along with sound baths, moon circles, collaborations with other neighborhood businesses, meditation club, and other gatherings that support movement, stillness, breath, and connection.
At the end of August, we are welcoming Bradshaw Wish to Ocean Bliss for a special weekend. If you know him, you know. If you do not, you can find him on Instagram at @bradshawwish. Registration will open soon, and we do expect his weekend to fill quickly.
In September, our Yoga Teacher Training begins. Some people come to training because they know they want to teach. Others come because something in them is ready to go deeper into the practice, the philosophy, the body, the breath, and the way yoga can shape a life.
However you enter the practice, the invitation is the same. Come back to yourself, again and again. Let the breath open a little more space. Let the body speak. Let the heart soften. Let the voice clear. Let the old layers loosen.
Radiance shines through when we practice making room for who we really are.
