Sandcastle Contest Returns Aug. 2

The Rockaway Beach Sandcastle Contest is back! Councilwoman Joann Ariola is once again picking up the shovel and hosting, while NYC Parks and The Rockaway Times will lend a helping hand. On Sunday, August 2, bring your pails and shovels and head to Beach 109th Street to get your hands sandy!

Registration takes place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Beach 109th, with the contest starting promptly at 11 a.m. Participants will have two hours to create a castle or sculpture like a whale, a dragon or anything that comes to their imagination. After all, this contest will be judged on creativity, detail and originality. There will be three age categories including 9 and under, 10 to 18 and 19 and up, with first, second and third place prizes for the winners of each, with gift certificate prizes generously donated by local businesses. This year, there will also be a special award for the “Most Patriotic” creation, in honor of America 250. There will also be giveaways throughout.

Among the judges will be Bridget Klapinski of the Rockaway Beach Civic Association, Rockaway Times staff and Councilwoman Ariola herself. “The sandcastle contest is a great local tradition that goes back decades, and I’m proud to once again be a part of it,” CM Ariola said. “This is always a wonderful day where we can really see some of the most amazing creative minds our community has to offer, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us this year.”
