Shy and Seeking

By By Shane Kulman

Dear Enchantress,

I am a 28-year-old man who has always been on the shy side. While I have a good career and a stable social life with friends and family, I have yet to experience a romantic relationship. This is something I want, but my shyness and lack of confidence make it challenging for me to approach women or express my feelings.

Whenever I find myself in social situations where I could potentially meet someone, I often feel overwhelmed and end up staying in the background. I’ve tried online dating, but I struggle to initiate conversations and often worry that I’m not interesting enough to keep someone’s attention.

I want to find a girlfriend, someone with whom I can share my life and build a meaningful connection. However, I don’t know how to overcome my shyness to meet someone special. How can I become more confident in social settings and improve my chances of finding a romantic partner? Any advice or strategies you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Sincerely,
Shy and Seeking

Dear Shy and Seeking,

Your heartfelt letter resonates with many who find themselves in the same place. The desire for meaningful connection is a fundamental part of life, your openness in seeking advice is a commendable first step! Bravo! Let’s explore some mindful and enchanting ways to help you navigate this journey.

Embrace Self-Discovery: Start by acknowledging and celebrating your strengths. Reflect on what makes you unique—your interests, values, and qualities. This self-awareness will not only boost your confidence but also help you connect with others on a deeper level. Write these things down.

Cultivate Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness to stay present in social situations. If mindfulness is new to you, there are many apps, or online classes, or if you can find a mindfulness class in person, it might be a wonderful place to meet new friends. Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or even a simple grounding exercise can help calm your nerves. Being fully present allows you to engage more genuinely with those around you. Also being nervous and awkward is something you can embrace, instead of trying to change it, see if you can think “that’s just how I am right now.”

Start Small and Build Confidence: Begin by engaging in low-pressure social interactions. Join a club or group that aligns with your interests, where the focus is on shared activities rather than direct socializing. Over time, these small interactions can build your confidence and ease your way into more significant social engagements.

Enhance Your Communication Skills: Consider taking a course or reading books on effective communication. Learning how to start and sustain conversations can be immensely helpful. Practice active listening, which shows genuine interest in others and can naturally lead to deeper connections.

Authenticity Over Perfection: Remember, you don’t need to be perfect to be loved. Authenticity is far more enchanting than any contrived image. Let your true self shine, imperfections and all. The right person will appreciate you for who you are.

Online Dating with Intention: When using online dating platforms, be intentional in your approach. Craft a profile that genuinely reflects who you are and what you seek. When initiating conversations, focus on shared interests or values to foster meaningful dialogue.

Patience and Persistence: Finding the right person is often a journey that requires patience. Be kind to yourself and stay persistent. Every experience, whether successful or not, is a step forward in your journey of growth and self-discovery.

Your shyness is just one aspect of who you are—it doesn’t define your worth or your potential for a loving relationship. By embracing these mindful strategies and allowing yourself the grace to grow, you open the door to enchanting possibilities.

May your path to finding love be filled with self-discovery, genuine connections, and the magic of authentic companionship.

Warm regards,
Enchantress Shane
