On Tuesday, June 16, St. Virgilius (BCAC) claimed the Intermediate Girls (seventh and eighth grade) Softball Championship with a thrilling 6–4 victory over Our Lady of Hope, bringing home yet another title for one of Broad Channel’s proudest youth organizations.
Pitcher Aviana Agramonte led the way with a dominant performance in the circle, recording multiple strikeouts while relying on a strong defense behind her. The infield featured Dylan Conklin at first base, Reagan Steiner at second, Keira Feeney at shortstop, Lilianna Montalbano at third base, and Mackenzie Mauro behind the plate. Patrolling the outfield were Fallon McConnell, Daphne Sassone, Grace Welsh, Mairead Leary, Mia James, and Madison Stevens, while Taylor Woupes and Gia Wittmer made valuable contributions throughout the season. Every player embraced her role and helped the Shamrocks earn the championship.
A packed crowd created an unforgettable championship atmosphere as current players, former athletes, longtime BCAC supporters, and families filled the stands. From the youngest Tee Ball players to alumni who once proudly wore the Shamrock uniform, the community came together to cheer on the next generation. For Head Coach Matt Conklin, along with assistant coaches Caroline Feeney, Tim Feeney, and Steve James, the victory was especially meaningful. The coaching staff has worked with many of these girls since they first stepped onto the field as Tee Ball players, making the eighth graders’ championship in their final BCAC season a fitting reward for years of dedication, growth, and friendship. The overwhelming support on championship night reflected the leadership of Athletic Director Barbara Corbett, Baseball and Softball Commissioner Jim Mangan, and the many coaches who continue to make BCAC one of Broad Channel’s greatest traditions.
The celebration didn’t end on the field. Following the championship, players, coaches, and families climbed into their cars for a victory parade through Broad Channel, honking their horns as they made their way through town. Neighbors came outside to wave, cheer, and congratulate the champions—a tradition that perfectly reflects the pride this community has in its young athletes.
This softball championship adds to another remarkable year for BCAC athletics. The organization also celebrated championships in volleyball, basketball, and flag football, while earning runner-up finishes in soccer and baseball. BCAC also provides opportunities for boys and girls to participate in swimming, tackle football, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and many other programs that help build confidence, character, and lifelong friendships.
As the eighth graders close this chapter, they leave behind a legacy of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. Their athletic journeys are far from over, as many of these seniors will continue competing at Archbishop Molloy High School, Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School, St. Francis Preparatory School, and Sacred Heart Academy. Their success is a testament to the strong foundation built through years of BCAC athletics.
Broad Channel may be a small island in the middle of Jamaica Bay, but its impact reaches far beyond its size. Through St. Camillus, St. Virgilius, and BCAC, generations of children have learned teamwork, resilience, sportsmanship, and leadership while proudly wearing the green and gold. Many who once played as Shamrocks return years later as coaches, volunteers, and mentors, continuing a tradition that has shaped Broad Channel for generations.
The Intermediate Girls Softball Championship is another proud chapter in BCAC’s story, reminding us that while championships fill the trophy case, it is the people, traditions, and lifelong bonds that truly define this community.
