The 42nd season of the St. Francis Summer Classic has begun with more than 1,200 players on 104 teams in 12 divisions.
The second-grade division, led by Skippy Doyle and Justin Flanagan, plays in the gym at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays. Teams are McManus Mechanical, Berkshire Hathaway, Pro Auto Ltd and Paddy Guy. Boys Grammar Junior plays on all four courts in the schoolyard at 5:45 p.m. on Mondays. Dan Quinn and Matt Donohue have joined our team as our newest division directors. Teams for this group are Rockaway Times, The Wharf, DJ’s@Work, Flynn & Flynn, Graybeards, George Clark Realty, Beach Bagels, and Sullivan Papain.
Greg Hearn and Ed Dennis helm the Boys Grammar Middle division with games at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays on Courts 3 and 4. The slate includes R.Tyne Painting, Jets Towing, Crustino’s, Ridgewood Savings Bank, T. Moriarty & Son, La Sorrentina, Rockaway Pickleball & Golf, Rockaway Hotel, Paul’s Bicycle Shop, and Belle Harbor Property Owners Association.
Dee Tubridy, Curtis Borgstede, and Mike McCann work together on the Boys Grammar division which includes J. Caiazzo Plumbing & Heating, Simply Strong Construction, Sand-Bar Contractors, CALLAHEAD, McCann Protective Services, Bungalow Bar, Denis S. O’Connor, 129 Pizza, The MeatUp Grill and O’sh, Kill, Wood, Ace, Mann & Delaney Est. 1961. The group plays mostly on Mondays at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. on Courts 1 and 2 as well as a few Wednesdays.
Marty McManus and Michael Friedman oversee the 12 Boys High School teams-Curran’s Superior Meats, Blue Bear Insurance Services, Healy’s Pub, Serenity Car Service, New York Surf School, Pizza on the Point, Super Seats USA, Seany Pizza, Bay Ridge Financial Services, Bedford Funding, Creamer Street Realty, and Melons. Games are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. on Courts 1 and 2.
Joe Visco and Tommy Coates once again shepherd the Girls Grammar division on Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m. on all 4 courts. The teams are Little Waves, Pipin’s Pub, J&E Industries, Walsh Properties, Harbor Light, The Parents’ Choice, Shannon Florist, and Friends of Michael Glover. John Wassenbergh has joined Kerry Brady and Siobhan Fitzgerald for the Girls Grammar Seniors and the teams are Clare’s Bears, Brooklyn Window and Door, The Neinast Team at Corcoran, Rockaway W.I.S.H., The Storage Place, McManus-Leahy Basketball Camp, Trinity Wiring and Security, and St Francis de Sales Catholic Academy.
The Girls High School squads are Mullin Basketball Camp, NF Beauty, Customer XR, and Walter Blum’s Giants. Terence Mullin and Alison Chavanne supervise the games in the gym on Wednesdays. at 7:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
The Clare Droesch Women’s Open division is once again led by Bryanne Flaherty and Kathryn Gibson with Jamesons, Pilot House, Callie’s, Polo Euro Market, Champion Elevators, Hair I Am, and Bigmamastef as the sponsors. Games are Mondays and Tuesdays at 7:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. in the gym.
Division 1 of the Tim Klein Men’s Open division has Jameson’s, Callie’s, Kennedy’s Restaurant, Cabana, A&S at the Harbor, JG Electric, LUV Cleaning, Rockaway Beach Local, and 4Elements. Division 2 boasts Jamesons, MLF, Coastal Real Estate, Paul’s Bicycle Shop, Boarders Surf Shop, Conte Carpets, Team UNC, Shermtown, and Approved General Contracting. Games are on all four outside courts on Thursdays at 7:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
The Graybeards consist of two divisions – The Young Guns and The Legends. Games are on Thursdays, primarily in the gyms at St Francis and St Camillus, and it is almost playoff time for these two groups.
