Dear Enchantress,
I write to you with a heavy, yet hopeful heart, for I find myself tangled in the web of things, objects I cannot bring myself to release. Each item whispers a memory, a fragment of a past, and I cling to them as if they are spells keeping me safe. But I know, like you, that I must learn to let go, so I ask for your magic. Guide me in releasing these anchors, so I can make space for what is new.
With tender hope…
Dear Tender Hope,
Oh, what a beautifully written question this is. “Each item whispers a memory.” Yes. They do. A sweater remembers who you were when you wore it. A trinket remembers a trip. A card remembers someone you loved. Objects can become little altars to our former selves, and it makes perfect sense that your hands hesitate to release them.
But let me offer you some enchantress magic. The memory does not live inside the thing It lives inside of you. The object is not the spell. You are. Sometimes we hold on to things because they make us feel safe. Sometimes we keep them because letting go feels like betraying a person, a version of ourselves, or a season of our lives. We worry that if we release the object, the memory will disappear too.
But memories are not so fragile. Love is not so fragile. You are not so fragile. I want you to try something simple. Pick up one item. Hold it in your hands. Thank it. Thank it for the comfort, the lesson, the memory, or the season it represents. Then ask yourself, “Is this object helping me live today, or is it helping me stay yesterday?”
Do not ask if the item is good or bad. Ask whether it belongs in the life you are creating now.
If the answer is no, bless it and let it go. You do not need to throw away your entire past in one weekend. That is not the magic. The magic is in making one tiny act of trust at a time.
Release one item. Then another. Then another. Imagine that every object you release creates a little pocket of breathing room in your home and in your heart. Space is sacred. Empty shelves are not empty at all. They are invitations. Nature teaches us this. Trees let go of their leaves. The moon lets go of its fullness. The tide releases the shore again and again. Nothing in nature clings forever. Perhaps this season of your life is asking you to become more like the tide.
To trust that what is meant for you does not need to be gripped tightly. To trust that you can honor your memories without becoming their storage unit. And remember this: You are not losing pieces of yourself. You are gathering yourself back from those things and remembering that your magic was never in the objects. It was always in the beautiful, brave heart that carried them.
Last week I helped a woman downsize her apartment overlooking the water. She held objects like spells, unable to decide what to release. I guided her gently, asking what still carried her forward. We filled bags with donations, clearing space for her becoming. She cried, then laughed, as the room finally breathed freedom again.
