Two Bodies, Including Drowning Victim, Recovered from Jamaica Bay

The weekend was marked by a series of bodies found around Jamaica Bay. One of them included the body of 18-year-old Brandon Figueroa, who drowned in the ocean off of Beach 733rd Street on May 19.

According to the NYPD, on Friday, May 29, at approximately 7:35 a.m., police responded to a 911 call of a water rescue behind the Beach Channel Educational Campus at Beach 100th Street. Upon arriving, police found unidentified body of a male on the rocks along the bay wall. What they uncovered was skeletal remains, suggesting the body may have been in the water for a long period of time. As we go to press, the individual is unidentified. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death and will attempt to identify the person. An investigation is ongoing.

Then on Saturday, May 30, at around 5:20 p.m., police responded to a 911 call for a water rescue in Jamaica Bay, off of Beach 222nd Street, near the tip of Breezy Point. Upon arrival, officers observed an unresponsive, unidentified male near the shoreline. The NYPD’s Emergency Services Unit responded to the location and removed the victim from the water. EMS responded and pronounced the victim deceased on scene.

According to an update to the Go Fund Me for Brandon Figueroa, his mother, Jeanette Munoz, shared the sad news that the body found was her son.

The other remains found come as a local teen remains missing. Jafet “Elijah” Jemmott, a 15-year-old from Arverne, has been missing since he left his home on November 28. Surveillance video showed him getting off the Q52 bus at Beach 95th Street. He remains a missing person. As the remains found on Friday have not been publicly identified, it is not clear if they are connected to this incident.
