Dear Editor:
My grandchildren are here in Rockaway for the week, and I want to take them to a beach that has lifeguards. But that is not easy anymore. Unfortunately, there are very few open beaches.
Shouldn’t there be signs on the boardwalk that tell us where the open beaches are? That would be useful but there are none.
There is a page on the NYC Parks site with a map that I was told gets updated daily, but at least today (Tuesday, June 30), it is very incorrect: https://www.nycgovparks.org/facilities/beaches/4
I called Council Member Joann Ariola’s office and the representative was very nice—and a former lifeguard—but the best she could come up with was to have Parks post the red flags at the unopened beaches. The are no red flags today on any beaches.
Every year we are told that the lifeguard coverage will improve, but every year seems to get worse.
